Actually...let me run this down.

1st purchase: Old Grand Dad. I liked it a lot. (until now)
2nd purchase: Dewar's 12 year old blended scotch (different product) I love it!

After reading about 100 hours worth of forums, tasting websites, competition results, etc., I have my choices all written down for all spirits. For bourbon it was: Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Bought a Riedel Bourbon glass and the whiskey today.

NOSE: WOW!! I can smell this all day! And that's why I said I "thought" I liked Old Grand Dad. This really is a winner in the nosing.

APPERANCE: Remarkable

TASTE: WOW!! Talk about spicey! This is a completely different ball game that the 2 Whiskey's mentioned above.

FINISH: I'm a newcomer. Still deciphering the definition of that. After my 1st sip, I'm just in la-la land and pondering over my experience.

My buget is about $30 for 750ml of bourbon. I will be enjoying this one for a while.

The standard Buffalo Trace bottling, at its best, is a fine bourbon, and an even finer value at its price. I don't recall seeing too many disparaging comments about it beyond a sometime 'earthy' quality. We all enjoy it.
Still, I hope you have the chance, in time, to taste some of the finer bottlings mentioned throughout these threads -- and you don't always have to pay over $30 for them, either -- as I think you'll find that not a few will match or exceed the qualities of BT.

Welcome to the group... BT is a fine bourbon, but just one of many on your long journey... just wait to you get to the other BT made bourbons... (Van Winkles, Staggs, Weller, etc)...

BT was more first love and still a staple in Palatial Snakster Manor. Especially for poker night, people ask for it by name.

I just picked up some BT locally at $22 the other day. Anxious to open it, but I have too many open bottles right now.

You have a whole world to sample at the price point you mention. If you can find it within your budget, Knob Creek and Bakers are two outstanding bourbons (Knob is right around high $20's around here and Baker's can be found with some searching for just over $30).

Tasting is more important than reading. It is important to try as many bourbons as possibly, as your personal favorite might be a relatively unpopular or infrequently discussed pour.
