Crown Royal Reserve

As I continue my explorations into Canadian territory, I've come to appreciate the fine qualities of CR. Of the many blends I've tasted, this has the least GNR bite to it.

Last night, I purchased a bottle of the regular Crown Royal that had a bonus 50ml bottle of Crown Royal Reserve. Tonight I poured myself a pony of it and am enjoying it quite a bit. It has a dryness to it that I find compliments the typical smooth, sweetness of the normal CR. I may even get a bottle of CRR soon. What I'm wondering is if this is a somewhat new expression. I just went on the CR website and they stated the label has changed. I believe this is what CR Special Reserve used to be, no? How long has this change been in place?

Lear, Not sure of the date on the label change. I was a Canadian whiskey drinker before I got into bourbon. I still have bottles of Crown Royal and CC in my cabinet. I did have the pleasure of tasting the CR Cask 16 last year. It was okay, but not my cup of tea. To me it was a bit harsher and heavier than the regular CR. The thing that I always liked about the Canadian whiskeys, was their smooth, sweet taste. I've been tempted to buy a bottle of the reserve, but haven't brought myself to pull the trigger on one yet. I've been too overwhelmed by bourbons. I do have a bottle of Forty Creek. It's pretty good stuff too. Their advertising states that it was voted the best Canadian whiskey. Even beat out CR Reserve. I dunno about that. I still have a soft spot in my heart for regular CR. Hard to beat CR as a Canadian whiskey in my book. Joe

IMO, Crown Royal Reserve is what regular Crown Royal was years ago and current Crown Royal, as good as it is, is a younger version of its former self. I have some CR from the 1960's and it is very close to todays CRR. My actual favorite Canadian is Canadian Club Reserve 10yr. Not only is it a decent drink with an age statement, it is 10.00 less a 750 than CR!

The change is quite recent, as it hasn't even taken effect in Ontario.

I just finished a bottle of Special Reserve that I got at a great discount and I really, really enjoyed it. Note the herbal quality to the aroma. I swear there are notes of dill.

I think that people who say Forty Creek Barrel Select is the best Canadian whisky need their heads examined. The flavour from the domestic sherry casks gives people the impression of great complexity. To me, it is redolent of cheap fortified wine. Still not bad, but hardly the pinnacle of Canadian whisky.

Now, Forty Creek Double Barrel Reserve is a different story...

I have a CR Limited Edition (duty free shop product) and it is a nice pour...not sure how much it differs from the CR Special Reserve and Cask 16...see this prior discussion:

The Reserve, Cask and XR seem to have fairly distinct reviews.
