    Insurance for Whiskey/Wine Collections?

I contacted a local branch of an insurance agency regarding purchasing renter's insurance for my apartment and was told that they could not insure any alcohol due to uncertainty in value. I guess I see their point to some extent with regard to open bottles of whiskey, but it's not really hard to figure out the replacement cost of unopened bottles of whiskey (which are tracked in an Excel spreadsheet) or wine (indexed online on CellarTracker, which has its own valuation systems.)

Anyhow, has anyone ever claimed a loss of whiskey or wine or other alcohol on their homeowner's policy or renter's policy? How did that turn out?

Relatedly, does your homeowner's policy or renter's insurance policy specifically discuss the insurance of alcoholic beverages or anything like that?

The agent I contacted suggested that I try to get insurance from an agency that specializes in insuring collections of alcoholic beverages. Do you all know of any place that offers affordable insurance for whiskey or wine collections? Or any insurance company that sells renter's policies that explicitly include insurance of alcoholic beverages.

A regular policy won't cover that.

Back in Florida I had my wines covered by a policy with Chubb, which is one of the companies that will write a policy on collectibles. At the time I took it, I had over 300 bottles the current value of which was about $22,000.

I think it was about $250 per year.

When we decided, in early 2005, to move to OR (once I found a job out here), we began "drinking down" the collection. At some point (around 175 bottles) I cancelled the Chubb policy. When we moved it was down to about 120 bottles.

I've been meaning to get a new policy, but still haven't gotten to it. I'll likely call Chubb first.

Thing is, that was for wine, which isn't flammable. Bourbon is flammable, and a policy maight cost a lot more...assuming you can even get one.

There was a discussion on this in 2007, IIRC. Search "insurance", and it should come up.

Thanks, found it. I remember seeing that thread and not thinking much about it. But now that my wine collection has increased in size and my whiskey collection has grown to include a fair amount of scotch, it makes a fair bit of sense.

Why would you insure Scotch or Wine?
