What Wee Dram are you enjoying now?

Sipping from a newly opened 1985 Alberta Springs 90 Proofer that I found while dusty hunting in SC last week. It's chewy. Nice hints of caramel on the nose and mid palate, but the alcohol is having it's way a little too much. I think this will need to sit for awhile. But, I can tell that there are some nice notes hidden in there.

Sounds good Joe, I think the alcohol notes derive from the whisky in the blend that is distilled at high proof. My suggestion is to blend in some WhistlePig - apparently made at the same distillery but even if not it doesn't matter - to get the balance you like.

Ah, yeah. I'd read this before somewhere (maybe here), but had forgotten. Here's British proof explained from wikipedia:
Where it comes from

This system was introduced in the 18th century. It might have been earlier, when spirits were tested with gunpowder: a mixture of water and alcohol proved itself when it could be poured on a small amount of gunpowder and still light up the wet powder. If the powder did not ignite, the mixture had too much water in it and the proof was considered low. This process led to the nickname firewater, given by Native Americans.


A "proven" solution was defined as 100 degrees proof (100°). People have found out that this takes 57.15% ethanol. This value is still used as the British definition. A simpler ratio to remember is seven to four: 70° proof is 40% alcohol by volume.


A hydrometer can be used to measure the precise proof of a spirit. This test has gone through many formal changes.

Just getting into Glendower 15 year old Port Wood. Comes across more like a brandy than a whisky. Not bad but lacking in balance.

Those are some tempting words. Always see this around in stores, and i don't think I've ever heard a bad word about it.

Haven't bought a bottle from across the pond in at lest 6-7 years now. Might be time to break that streak.
