Here in Chicago we have a supermarket/pharmacy chain called Jewel/Osco and the latter sells beer, wine and spirits. Among their many products are a few "house" brands that I've never heard of, but I decided to take a chance on their 10 year old Islay malt which is sold under the "Origine" house label (I noticed Osco also sells Origine vodka, gin and tequila among other spirits) when I saw it on a clearance shelf, reduced from the original price of $25 to $7.99. I shit you not, the stuff was actually surprisingly good and considerably better than Black Bottle and Islay Mist, both of which I really like. I know that sounds hard to believe but several other friends, in a blind tasting, thought the same. God knows who produces the whisky for Origine but at $7.99 I wish I had bought the other two remaining bottles before someone else snatched them up. I tried Googling "Origine" to find out more info but it turned up absolutely nothing for me. Clearly, the whisky is a blend of Islay malts but is one with more body than BB or IM and a nice buttery/silky texture. I'll be looking for more to put in my crystal decanters now that I know my friends like it too.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I bought a bottle of Michael Collins 10-year Single Malt Irish Whiskey. I'm curious to see what it's like, since the label says "lightly peated."
It is a product distilled by Cooley, who has yet to let me down, so I'll let you know what I think of this dram in the next few days.

No Irish in the house, an oversight which shows how busy I've been lately.
For reasons which I cannot recall I was thinking 'Origine' is a house brand owned by Albertson's.
