Thanks, I hope so. The Black is A-OK, I view it as a reasonable choice when the bar selection is limited.

Which Water of Life Did You Purchase Today?

I made out like a bandit at Binny's 15% off sale last weekend:

    Longrow 10/100 - a favorite I dislike being without.
Longrow 11yo CS sherry - earthiest expression of peat I've ever tasted, complimented by jellied yellow fruit.
    Hazelburn 8yo CS - I'm a Springman.
Lagavulin 12yo CS - my first Laga. Intense yet refined.
Laphroaig 14yo CS (Binny's Signatory cask) - I loved their DTNC2 13yo and this is similar, with great and subtle distillery character.

And now I'm off the buy it train and on the drink it train! (Yeah, right...)

Astor did a 15% off sale for Burns Day. Picked up three Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength Batch 004 bottles and another Lagavulin 12 Year 2012. Love me some young, cask strength Islay whiskies.

Question: I have a 'phroaig CS #4 at home that's 58.3%, and all of the googling leads to the same, but the three bottles from Astor are 58.6%. They're the same batch number, bottled in January 2012. Any ideas about what's going on?

I read somewhere (possibly not on SB) that the same scotch can be bottled at one proof for the EU, another for duty free stores, and another for the US markets.

However, my professional background is in QA for analytical chemistry labs, and I would not allow the same batch number to be assigned to 3 "daughter" solutions (at slightly different concentrations) even if they were diluted from the same "mother". Master distillers may feel differently, or operate under different rules/deal with different auditors.

The Scots have been making their own rules for quite awhile now, but Bourbon producers also use different proofs/bottle sizes for different international markets.

I'm a complete idiot. The bottle at home is 58.6% as well. But all of the Internet reviews and photos show 58.3%. Maybe I'll tweet at Laphroaig and see what comes of it.

Re: Which Water of Life Did You Purchase Today?

Received my order of Glenfarclas 40, Springbank 12 CS, and Port Charlotte PC7.

Very bummed to see the Glenfarclas was leaking when I opened the tin. The cork also fell apart, and now I'm scared to find out what's inside. After years of receiving orders, I have two bad corks in a week! One was a bottle of Don Julio 1942 that smells/tastes WAAAAY off (terrible musty funk) from what it usually tastes like. This GF40 was supposed to be my "wedding bottle", so I'm hoping the retailer can help me out in some way.
