First time buying McLelland Islay. Not great but better than Black Grouse. Looking for some inexpensive everyday Islay pours. Next purchase may be Bowmore 12. Anyone like or dislike it? I loved the 17 yr.

If it had a name, I'd kind of expect McLelland Islay to be Bowmore 6. My money is on your Bowmore 12 tasting like a more mature version of McLelland, perhaps for good reason.

I actually picked up a Bowmore 12 for the same reason. I find it to have nice flavor. It does satisfy the need for peat and smoke, but does not satisfy the need for complexity. But for the price, it works....

I've always found Bowmore 12 to be quite satisfying and perhaps a bit under-rated, though I would agree that it is somewhat less complex than most Islays. Check it out.

Mclelland's: Smokier, yes. Better... It has a dirty taste that puts me off. Same with Bowmore 12, but the 12 is far better than McLelland's.

I guess that's what I meant by better (i.e., smokier). I was disappointed in Black Grouse since it didn't taste much different than its non-Islay blend offering.
