Re: NorCal dusties

Glad to hear it's some good bourbon! It must've been 86.8 then (I was walking to the Longs and had "a couple in me" so my memory may not've been too keen).

I'm sure it's there still on the shelf. I'll be sure and grab it.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: NorCal dusties

Picked this OT from '78 the other day--tax strip: distilled 1970. I procured it at the same retailer from whence I purchased the previous 3 bottles of (approx. late '80s Old Taylor). This one must've been some of the last they had in stock. I'm curious to open it, even more so wonderin' if they gots more...

Still hoping one day to find some Nat. Distillers Old Grand Dad. That would be a score and a half for me.

Cheers,

Are you talking about a BIB or any Old Grand Dad? I purchased a 1979 and a 1981 Old Grand Dad (ND) but they were both 86 proof.

Re: NorCal dusties

Well, my forays into the bowels of Oakland while hunting have most certainly led to some interesting finds. I did find my ND OGDs I was hoping for, although I haven't tasted any yet. The BiBs date from '84.

A big score were several bottles 2 lg. 5 sm. of PA made Old Overholt. Just 80 proof, but a thrill I thought I'd never experience nonetheless.

What I did unearth were two unknown bottles to me. I searched around a bit for some info and found them to be mildly interesting. They are a '64 bottle of Old Echo Spring 7yo. I cracked it open to find a decent, yet unexceptional pour--but the bottle is nice! From what I believe it is now HH, but who made it then?

As for the other bottle, which I left on the very dusty shelf, was Old Glenmore. After reading an old post about it here--which stated there were Oats in that there mashbill--I'm wondering what it was that I saw. I can't remember the bottle date--from the '70s?

Also found and left on the shelf were a few bottles of HH 6yo. I looked hard, but for the life of me couldn't find any proof statement. These, I think, dated from the late '70s or early '80s.

Anyhow, I've almost exhausted all that Oakland has to offer. Now my dream find would be a WT 12 yo! I'm actually surprised I saw none. Plenty of 8yo bottles, but nothing older.

I'll try and get a collective photo up of everything once I have the chance.

Still searching,

jinenjo,

If you're interested in buying and dealing some of the WT 8yo, I'm in the market. I love that stuff, and there's none to be had here in Dallas.

I love the ND OGD, too. Congrats on that find.

Re: NorCal dusties

Just a small sampling of my finds.

Today I grabbed the OT BiB, dist. '71-bottled '81. I was quite eager to come home an crack it open, as I liked the look and sound of an OT 9 y.o.

The Forester BiB is 5 y.o. bottled in '74.

And the Old Crow. Ahhh. That was a pleasing find. I've passed up many (and all of the) 80 proofs from the '80s, but coming upon this one (86 proof--bottle stamp 1970) was calling to me. After first opening it I liked it only a little, but last night a week later, I couldn't get enough of it. So light, yet rich and sweet. Very tasty to say the least.

Sadly, my hunting days will slow down in the new year due to other priorities and a hunting ground that's been all but covered. I've pretty much "fished all my wishes" like the Overholt, a S-W OF Prime, OGDs, OTs. Perhaps one day I'll nail a WT 12yo.

Speaking of WT, I did happen upon a WTKS, which I've never tried. It had what appeared to be a pewter top, but knowing virtually nothing about it--in addition to a proof on the neck label that was rubbed off or faded--I passed. Perhaps some research is in order.

Cheers!

Re: NorCal dusties

That older bottle of Old Forester should be quite nice. I have some older bottles that date late 70's into the early 80's and I really like this bourbon. I'm not a big fan of the current OF releases, but the older stuff is very good.

Re: NorCal dusties

The only recent Forester bottling I've ever had was a 100 proof two years back. I was good, but nothing special. The birthday bourbons are more intriguing, yet I've tasted none so far.

As for the older stuff, it ranks up there as some of the best whiskey I've ever had. Even the 86 proof I have (from 1977) is exceptional. Now I know why Roger was always raving about the vintage Forester.

Re: NorCal dusties

You are correct. In fact tonight I had some early 80's OF 86 proof. Tasty.

Definately go back and get that WTKS pewter top, you will not regret it.
Like Tim AKA TNbourbon said if your dealing that WT 8yo keep me in mind.
