I have set out on several unfruitful hunting trips. I once asked the woman who was manning the store if they had any old bottles of bourbon with tax stamps. She looked at me like she was confused. I said, remember the old red strips that went across the tops of liquor bottles many years ago. her reply was: sorry, I don't drink.

We even offered him more $$ than what the price was. Through numerous iterations of the same conversation, we finally determined that he was very well aware of what was on the shelf and he intended to keep all the old bottles for himself for his collection...
I think I would have asked him: If they are part of a private collection not for sale, why are they displayed with the rest of his wares?

Greg and I went on this trip together. I asked the owner that question and all he said was he hadn't gotten around to moving them to his home. Considering they've been there for, well, nearly forever, his "explanation" was pretty much a non sequiter.

So, I gave him my business card with my home number on it and asked him to call me if he should change his mind. *shrug* Not much else we could do.

Re: Dusty Finds

I get a big kick out of these stories because I know there are some retailers out there with their heads spinning, not knowing what to make of this "phenomenon."

Re: Dusty Finds

I've run into this too........where some items in the store are part of their "collection". When asked why, the best answer I ever got from an owner was....

"Because if I brought anymore whiskey(y) home, she'd kill me. So I leave it here until I wan't to drink it."

It's perfect as he's got a place to collect stuff while his wife thinks its inventory for sale.

My response was....."What days of the week does she mind the store and work the register?"

Re: Dusty Finds

While it was by definition "dusty", I don't think it was really that old. Picked up a bottle of OGD 114. It looks awful new, but I did notice the back says "LOT No. 1"? My guess is they all do?

At the same place I came across a 750ml of Knob Creek that appeared to have been signed by Fred Noe in what looked like Gold colored ink. As I only buy to drink I left it on the shelf for someone else. They also had one bottle each of the 16 year Black Maple Hill Bourbon ($80) and a similiar bottle of Rye ($90). Left both on the shelf as I simply couldn't justify spending that much right now.

Was happy with the OGD 114, it's the first bottle (and their only one) I've seen around here.

I believe you are correct - I purchased a new bottle of OGD 114 and it says the same thing on the back label.

Heh, good response. Unfortunately, in this case the wife won't sell any of them either. She tells you to check with her husband, who says, "no." So, any time I'm in town I'll drop by to see if someone other than the husband or wife are working.
