Randy to the rescue, even way back when!

These were all meant to be sent to Japan, but my corner store must have had a case "fall off a truck" on the way to the port a few miles away.

I just opened a 1969 JW Dant American Legion decanter and the whiskey is smooth with no off tastes to it at all. It had minor evaporation which was hard to tell with the shape of the decanter, that it might have just been low fill.
The '62 OF decanter was intact and the juice therein is delicious!!! Wave upon wave of classic SW flavors. Don't know how I'm going to save it.

I guess someone has to have a differing opinion, I have a bottle open, been so for almost a year I'd guess and it just doesn't do much for me. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about it other than to say it seems harsh and not as soft and creamy as I find other SW VW products. No where near an ORVW 15, but that's why they say YMMV.

Does yours have the strip stamp or the TE cap?

The strip stampers are the real hand bottled ones when it was Julian an' his boy bottlin' up the good wikkey in a quiet old distillery. Reminds me of reading in Sally Van Winkle's book about everything floating around the Hoffman plant when the flood happened. Maybe the TE cappers were bottled in the latter days at Hoffman, too, dunno.

I have a TE cap bottle brought back from Japan around 2006, but haven't opened it yet. I'm not sure if VW ever bottled the 12/105 at BT and "used up" their old Lawrenceburg labels like all the other distilleries have been allowed. I may dig out my bottles to compare.

Re: Dusty Finds

Mine is the strip stamp. I'm going to save it to open when I get to meet up with some of you SB guys - maybe in the Fall in Kentucky, or at the annual November event here in Tallahassee.

Re: Dusty Finds

I sampled the TE cap at a pal's bunker recently and while it was good, it was nothing to write home about. I would rate OWA, ORVW 10/107 and ORVW 15 all above it. A great collector's item, but Old Rip's best work was still ahead of him.

Re: Dusty Finds

What I'd like to see now is a complete run of all the various Van Winkles over the decades so that I may drool over them. Anyone have more pics of old Van Winkles?

Couple years ago I attended a small gathering at a friends house for a tasting event. It was a lot of fun and of course the selections were mighty tasty.....see the thread here.
