Guero 15 YR American Light Whiskey Finished in Pinot Noir Casks
Scotch_Collector posted a topic in Other American Whiskey
I have seen the 14 year light whiskey/Guero from Savage and Cooke. It looked interesting and as I have mentioned here before, I have 4 other light whiskey's (Penelope 15 year, Jacobs Pardon, RY3, and Cat's Eye Obtainium). I enjoy them immensely and find them to be very corn forward and generally sweet with other nuanced flavors. When I saw the Guero aged in Pinot Noir casks, I was intrigued. The explanation/fact sheet is below but my two cents are as follows. It is very consistent with a light whiskey (although the ABV is under 60% and the lowest of any light whiskey I have) in terms of the sweet and vanilla like flavors you get on the palette. However, the wine cask influence is definitely noticeable and an interesting departure from what I have come to expect from light whiskey. It is not an overly sweet (the wine flavor) but rather fruity and a little tangy. It balances the whiskey well. I only had it the other day and was not feeling my best. If my opinion changes, I will update. However, this is a solid and unique addition to the collection. Rating: 8.25/10 https://savageandcooke.com/spirits/guero-american-whiskey-15-year/ -

Ahh okay. Yeah being Kentucky there's no telling who made it. I'm not familiar with that brand personally so I don't have any idea either . -

Probably says "distilled in" with a location in fine print on the back label. If it says distilled in Indiana, then it's MGP. -

I've heard similar from others on the Smoke Wagon. It's one of the factors that have prevented me from buying a bottle. Thank you for sharing -

I see these from time to time. Who sources the the bourbon for them? They often come with excellent reviews -

I always understood it as Masters first week of April and then wait until Father’s Day for the US Open. By slotting in the PGA in May you can keep some momentum of enthusiasm for golf built around the majors. I’m sure summer heat was built into that decision making. And that clears the way for the Fed Ex Playoffs to end the golf year but that hasn’t caught on like they hoped. -
What Irish Whisky are you drinking or have you purchased in 2025?

That's an odd experience IMHO, as I don't feel the 12 and 15 are THAT much different (one being a drain pour for you and the other something you actually enjoy). I found the regular 12 at 80 proof to be just too thin to be enjoyable (but not a drain pour). I really like the 12 Cask strength however. Just more evidence about the weird differences in all our palates! Bottom line is that I'm glad you found an Irish whiskey that you enjoy. Irish pot still whiskey is definitely a different breed of cat. -

It is weird to have all the majors done in July. Anybody know why they moved the PGA Championship away from August? Summer heat maybe? There isn't much else going on in the sports world in August so I don't really get it. -

Well, it was pretty much a "labor of love" after all, eh? -
Now I’m hungry and thirsty. At least I know how to solve one of those problems. Cheers

Today was the 25th anniversary celebration of my American Legion posts Sons Of The American Legion organization. There was a “grill your own” steak fry in the evening. I ain’t the best griller, but I did pretty good on my steak today.

Was out on a bourbon hunt today and found a package deal on the American Light Whiskey from Penelope and the Rose Cask Strength $220 for both wasn't terrible when you consider the American Light 17 year is going for no less than $250 on the secondary market. I found the 17 year to be really good. It packs a punch at 138 proof. I'm happy with it. I know a few others preferred the Jacob's Pardon over the Penelope. I actually liked the Penelope over the Jacob's Pardon.

I went on a bourbon hunt today. Picked up a Peg Leg Porker 12 year. It was very good, a bit pricey, but $100 for a 12 year seems about right. Worth a try.

Great summary of these different bourbons.

Took a break from draining the low-fill JD BP SB to drain another of my 'sample bottles' from some time ago. This one was a rather larger one than most; 4-ounces. It was a Booker's "Bluegrass" from early 2016, almost 128-proof. (Nearly did me in!) Not quite as good as the "Toogie's Invitation" Booker's I killed off a week or so ago; but, very nice, as nearly all the Booker's bottles I've ever tasted. The usual profile: peanut brittle, brown sugar, caramel, and alcohol burn (more so that the Toogie's). So... another one bites the dust!
