Interestingly, LDI makes two bourbon mashbills that are nearly identical, except each has only 4% malted barley - the missing percent going to the rye.

I've long been curious just exactly how the ten mashbills and five yeasts got started, and when. I suspect it started with Seagram, who not only were blenders but who distilled from a wide variety of mashbills and yeasts so they could build a palette from which to choose fillings for their blends.

During the Frankfort Distillers days, Four Roses was advertised as a blend of straight whiskeys (as was its sibling Paul Jones), and sold at 90 proof. But during the post-Prohibition and WWII eras, this was not unusual. Many blends of straight whiskeys were sold, undoubtedly because keeping aged whiskey in stock was difficult. But the general trend was to use a small amount of aged whiskey to flavor a larger amount of whiskey that was under two years old; that is a far cry from what Four Roses does today.

Jim told me the yeasts came from Seagrams. He had access to all of the segrams yeasts at that time. Apparently there are hundreds of yeasts. Most are mutations all kept alive just in case :hot:

I haven't seen this on the shelves anywhere yet -- where has it surfaced so far?

I haven't seen it yet. Will pick one up when I do.

Someone posted upthread on a Derby Museum SB selection, but that link just don't work for me. Curious about this particular bottling, I searched for info and found this wonderful video, which, though lacking in any information whatsoever (i.e. the recipe they picked, etc.), is still, like, really awesome in a jealousy-inducing way. Who wouldn't want to do a tasting at 4R? And them pours is healthy.

Mostly.

I love the moment at around 1:10 where the 4R dude (looks like Ruteledge?) gets to the end of the supply in his barrel extraction pourer thingy, and the lady in pearls tilts her glass in a way that clearly says, "WTF? WEAK POUR."

Glazer's just dumped 5 or 6 cases on DFW. I know where two of them went. Trying to get some more in at my local shop

The Four Roses site doesn't seem to include the OBSK or OESV in the 2011 LE SmB. It shows OBSQ, OESQ and OESK.

Of course it could certainly be wrong! It also doesn't seem to show the 2010 LE SmB at all which on this list is the same recipes used as the 2012 (with different ages of course).

Can anyone clarify?

Sorry if this has been covered, but 4R first and third letter designations seemed fairly fixed. Have they or are they ever likely to produce anywhere else than Lawrenceburg (O) and anything other than straight whiskey (S)?

One is inclined never to say never. When Kirin purchased Four Roses they took steps to re-establish both the quality of the whisky and the former prominence of the brand, so one is encouraged that emphasis will continue.

Unlikely, but I could see them distilling outside Lawrenceburg, or distilling rye whiskey and giving it another letter, or distilling gin and giving it a different letter.

The four-letter pattern more likely seems to be becoming part of their "lore", and can and does get used all over their marketing. I'm just happy that they make really great whiskey at prices I can afford. :D

Aren't the O and the S left over from Seagrams? At the time Seagrams owned FR they were producing various types of whiskey at various distilleries.

Yep. That. As I understand it the O was for Old Prentice, one of the names of what's now Four Roses.
