fishnbowljoe Posted August 8, 2010 Share Posted August 8, 2010 The historic former firehouse of Buffalo Trace Distillery, 113 Great Buffalo Trace, Frankfort, now offers distillery visitors lunch and dessert in the newly opened Firehouse Cafe.Originally constructed on the distillery grounds in 1951, the firehouse and its employees protected the highly flammable barrels of spirits in the warehouses. In 1964, the distillery traded its hand-pump engine for a Ford fire truck that can still be seen parked in front of the cafe. The building was used for storage after the advent of modern sprinkler systems.Today the firehouse displays memorabilia, such as firefighter coats and boots from its early days, and provides soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts to hungry visitors. “We wanted to create a fun, comfortable place for visitors to sit down and enjoy lunch, and the old firehouse seemed like a natural fit,†says Elizabeth Hurst, the visitor center's manager.Offerings include a “Single Barrel†turkey and Swiss sandwich, a buffalo chicken wrap and a “Firehouse Favorite†chili cheese dog. Desserts include banana pudding with bourbon caramel sauce and a root beer float.The cafe is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
