There has been little traffic on both over the last couple of years and I'm not 100% sure there will not be an effort to keep either up, but they have both announced that they will be ending. Blue Agave Forum and Tequila.net.

Hmm, I used to use Tequila.net on occasion if for no other reason than the NOM index was useful to see what was made where. But it has slowly gotten out of date so I guess now I know why!

 

Never spent much time on Blue Agave forum even back in the day.

Just watched the semi finals of Top Chef which take place in Mexico.  The contestants cooked a dish for employees of Patron.  The winner of the episode's challenge was awarded a limited edition of Patron in a crystal decanter which the judges said was worth $7,500.00.  The best part of the episode is that the winner immediately cracked it open and took a chug right out of the bottle.   I don't know anything about tequila, but that was an awesome move.  I wish retailers of LE bourbon would sell at retail prices with the requirement that the bottle be open at the register and nice pull be taken right from the bottle. :lol:

That'd go a long way toward bringing down prices on LE bottles. It'd also force me to drink the LEs more quickly rather than waiting for some hypothetical special occasion.

 

This weekend I picked up a bottle of Don Abraham reposado to give to someone for housewarming. The Tequila Tourist blog gave high marks to both the blanco and the anejo, so I figured the reposado would be good as well. Ended up opening the bottle to make palomas, so I tried some neat. It has some really nice fruity agave notes with a peppery and slightly sour/bitter finish. Really good stuff for $35.

I grabbed a bottle of Chamucos Reposado this weekend. I've never had it, but World Market (Cost Plus) had it on sale for only $25, which was too cheap to pass up.

I don't profess to be a tequila expert, but after opening this puppy up I have to say that it's the best sipping tequila I've ever had the pleasure to drink.

this was the margarita mix for cinco de Mayo. 
yep that's a 1.5 liter bottle!!

This is definitely one of my favorite tequilas. Just wish I could find it here. Picked up my bottles of Blanco and Reposado in Cozumel.

Try Clase Azul Reposada. 
It is probably my favorite tequila next to Don Julio 1942. 
I take it back... For the price I like it more than 1942

I had never seen Clase Azul Reposado or Blanco in any store near me until yesterday. I purchased both in Cozumel while on vacation after a tasting, and it's probably my favorite brand of tequila. The Blanco is very good and a bit cheaper than the Reposado. It comes in a clear glass version of the Reposado porcelain bottle. The price in the store near me was $100 for the Reposado, and I think $80 for the Blanco. Not cheap, but maybe now I'll have a glass a little more frequently since I know I can replace it when my bottles are empty without having to make a trip to Mexico.

I am enjoying a couple ounces of Campeon blanco. This was a K&L exclusive blend from a couple years ago, though I can't recall how it differs from the normal release of Campeon blanco. It starts pretty peppery, but the pepper fades into some earthy agave notes. Yum

Holy moly those look good.

I just happened upon a new bar that is making free Avion tequila drinks tonight. I have a feeling several margaritas are in my future.

They were as good as they look.  My wife is already asking if we can have them again tonight.  Had to buy more mango at the grocery store this morning.

1 1/2 cups diced, peeled mango
3 oz tequila
1 oz Cointreau

2 oz lime juice
3 tablespoons sugar
2 cups ice cubes
Blend!

 

edit to add the above makes two 16oz servings (roughly)

Well I was hoping his "quest" would end with the sale and I wouldn't have to see his smug grin on their marketing materials anymore, but it sounds as though he'll still be associated with the brand for the foreseeable future. Not all stories have happy endings...unless you're George Clooney.

Folks, I have a lot of experience with and a large collection of Mezcal, different agave varietals, producers... But I'm just beginning to explore tequila. I know, it is usually the other way around.

 

Keeping in mind that I am familiar with agave in general, could you please give me a few pointers to get me started? Specifically, I am looking at advanced-level drinks at this point, with the presumption that my mezcal background is sufficient to appreciate non-entry tequilas (I might be terribly wrong there!). But I am hesitant to go & randomly buy those fancy extra anejos, as everybody recommends starting out with younger spirits that retain the blue agave character.

 

Atm I have the Partida Reposado and Fortaleza Anejo in my bar. Took 2 pours from the former and enjoying its familiar agave taste combined with mild oak flavors. Aged agave spirits is relatively new to me, as most of the best mezcals around are unaged.

^^^I would recommend that you read this thread.  IMO, Max did a great job here, while laying out quite a nice blueprint for one to follow.

Cheers, will do. To be honest I posted without going through all 40 pages, but will read everything in a day or two.

 

Meanwhile, I cracked open the Fortaleza Anejo right now, and even though it is impressive in its own way, I can already see why aged tequilas could give the "wrong impression" to uninitiated drinkers.

There are many on this thread I'd still like to find.  So far, I think reposados are my wheelhouse here.  I recommend: Ultimo Agave, Olmeca Altos, and Espolon.
