Poured another one of these for another forum member earlier in the day, Wryguy and his brother made a pit stop by the house on their cross country pillage for a little bit. Always nice to meet another, and once again proves my belief that there are some amazing great and generous folks amongst the board. I'm looking forward to getting out his way some day to see the goods out there. Of course, he also made a very generous deliver to my bunker, which left me smiling the rest of the day. of course, seeing the look on his face as he picked up his, was priceless. It was a genuine look of true awww. GaryT Posted April 18, 2013 Share Posted April 18, 2013 Finally uncorked my Willett 25yr rye (my 10th anniversary present, purchased last September). The nose is nice - woody (as you'd expect!), with charred oak front and center and more molasses than baking spices. I think this would have been amazing . . . if bottled a few years earlier. At least on this initial pour, on the palate it was very bitter - so much so that it was overpowering. Hoping it improves with some air, or just an off night (although I poured a half-ounce of some Willett 4 yr rye first to warm up the palate and see if my senses were working, and it tasted as nice as it usually does). Yet another reminder that I should always follow my own rule to "try before you buy", at least on any purchases over $50 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

At the beginning of the bottle, the older Barton rye flavor predominated, and it was great. It has a butterscotch note reminiscent of dusties, so much so that I've been pairing it with a sample of ND OGD BiB or OF BiB to calibrate my taste buds. It brings out the aged rye notes in the others, enhancing their flavors to me. The price, on the other hand - I wish I could wash that taste out of my mouth! Not surprisingly it is very similar to Bulleit Rye, but the charcoal filtering seems to give it a slightly different flavor. At $32 it's expensive, but still cheaper than Bulleit.
