I believe you are correct. Apparently an agreement was struck with the SWA to allow them to sell through the labels in question instead of recalling them. Originally purchased solely for the bottle shape; its a keeper for moi. Did not know until recently of their hyper-aging gimmick that just don't work very well. Explains most of my complaints. One of the many reasons we are brothers. I bought a previous iteration of this a few years upon a high recommendation and absolutely hated it. I revisited this last night and you are dead on with the artificial sweetener comparison. That was the flavor that I just couldn't place, but knew I had tasted before. I could see where you'd get the extra sweet notes in the regular Sour Mash version. I've relegated my bottle as a mixer, my wife likes it mixed with a little unsweet tea or one of her dry white wines. Both sound unappealing to me, but she likes it. As for the Toasted Barrel variant, it definitely has similar sweet notes to it, but something else that gives it an extra tingle. I can't think of a better way to describe it. For me, I prefer the sour mash over the bourbon and found the same for the toasted Barrel offerings. I poured out my last Michter's bourbon bottle, it was just sour to me. Is it different than what would be considered typical? No they didn't. Just that it didn't have 51% corn. I think I read somewhere it is 45% corn, 45% rye, 10% barley. My guess is they just needed a name for it so sour mash it is. They did share that the Michter's 10 year this year will be their own bourbon and not sourced. A friend found it for me sealed a few years back. It’s actually quite good, with a spicy caramel /rye taste going on. Not labeled bourbon, so I guess it goes in this category. Also, I agree with you guys. Not a fan of any Michters “toasted” product at all. I keep trying various products and find it all repulsive to my tastes. There were some excellent bourbon and rye examples, and a few guests from the US who took us though their thoughts on their products we were sampling. The final product of the night was a Westward American Single Malt. As a non-scotch drinking participant, I found it to be reasonably good. Westward recently released a single barrel cask strength version through K&L wines that @Kpiz alerted me to. Haven't tried it yet but it has some serious color for a 5yo craft whiskey!
