What Rum/Rhum did you buy today?

Mmm. It's cold in the UK in late January, but I might have to put on a coat indoors and fire up the blender...

Plantation 3 Star is another aged and filtered blanco that works well. No experience with the Pritchards Crystal. And if you want to bring a little of the El Dorado flavor to it the 3 year old is another good option.

Can you tell I like the aged Blanco's??? :D

Those were 2 I was really looking for (Plantation & ED3) but couldn't find. The Prichard's is almost completely tasteless in a drink & super sweet on the nose, but did have the advantage of being $9. How does Cruzan Aged Light (which I heard is 3yo) stand up if you've tried it before? I know I like Flor de Cana 4yr Extra Dry as an aged light rum that I can get, but the Cruzan is half the price where I am. I want to save some money cause I'd only be using light rum in cocktails but don't want to sacrifice taste/quality as much as this Prichard's Crystal seems to do.

Not had the Pritchard so can't compare to that. Cruzan is a big industrial rum that is maybe a step up from Bacardi (which is not saying that much in my opinion). Cruzan Aged Light rum is indeed a blend of rums from 1 to 4 years or so that is filtered to be almost clear like the Plantation. Will do as a mixer but not my preferred rum. A bit sweeter in character then FdC. Probably closer to Plantation but lacks a bit of the complexity of the Plantation which is a blend of rums from three different islands, hence the name. Cruzan is probably better than the Pritchard though. FdC 4yo Extra Dry, Plantation 3 star and ED 3yo are all better to me for cocktails.

FdC is the driest and tends to be a favorite for mixing where you don't want to add more sweetness. Plantation is a little sweeter and Ed is the sweetest so would likely impact a cocktail more. The reverse order for drinking it straight although none of them is what I would call a sipping rum by themselves of course! The FdC in particular is not my favorite on its own unless you really like a dry rum.

I should mention that FdC has recently been taking some flak in the media about treatment of workers and about how they are in bed with the government (you know, the supposedly socialist government of Daniel Ortega who is there to "take care" of the little people...) although I suspect they are hardly unique in Latin America and the Caribbean.

If you can find some Bacardi Heritage edition (in the cardboard tube), get yourself some of that! Exceptional white rum and very cheap in the US.

Note I'm not endorsing any other Bacardi.

Other white rums of note include finding some leftover Tommy Bahama rum still around in stores (if you're a dusty hunter, you'll see it around from time to time). Always on close out price, and it's made by Richard Seale's Foursquare distillery. VERY good stuff for peanuts.

Interesting about the Tommy Bahama rum. Did not know it was from Foursquare.

Thanks for all the info and other suggestions! I think it may be worth looking for a FdC alternative then. Awesome how much variety and value you can find for <$30 in rum!

Considering pulling the trigger on one or two K&L bottlings but it's a lot of coin for something that isn't whisky.  The Enmore 25 sounds delightful but the price...

Good man! It will be a while before I get to taste this one. You'll have to tease us all with a review here!

Drinking a wonderful glass of Penny Blue by the Berry Bros And Rudd people. A Mauritius blend, very much oak forward with a nice nutmeg edge. Recommended if the price is right.

I picked that up a while ago and seem to recall taking it in for a Wednesday tasting but then not getting to it for some reason. Time to dig it out again I suppose!

After working my way through all the rums we purchased for Tiki purposes my favorites were always the the Jamaicans, Appleton & J. Wray & Nephew - Guess I like that hogo! Next on the radar to try something else is probably The Real McCoy or that Bacardi Heritage, depending on what the wife endorses...

If you like Jamaican hogo you might want to also try Smith & Cross which is purpose made to bring hogo to a cocktail, not to mention some added punch at 114 proof. Not my favorite sipping rum but good for cocktails!

Received a bottle of Santa Teresa 1796 Ron Antiguo De Solera Rum from a friend in Venezuela. I can't read the back label but I do see a mention of 15 years on the back.

Santa Teresa is a Venezuelan "sweet" rum (meaning added sugar despite the likely protestations of the distillery) that is one of those pseudo solera aged rums which means their might be a little bit of older rum to include 15yo in it but the barrel gets periodically topped up with younger rum similar to Zacapa. Not a bad rum and not super pricey. They make an interesting orange liqueur as well.

Picked up a bottle of Appleton 12 Year yesterday. A really good bottle for sipping. I would not mix this at all.

Need to try the Ron Zacapa 23 yr again. Must have had a bad bottle last time because I didn't like it at all

Snagged an old Cruzan Diamond Single Barrel 5yr (NOT the version you can get today), along with two Cruzan "Clipper" 2yrs (at 120 proof - might mix well).

Trying to be good, but sometimes those bottles just dangle in front of ya!

I have not been a rum drinker in the past, unless you count a rum & coke with twist of lime.  So starting to do some research, read reviews, also this Rum forum.

Purchased a Bacardi 8, and an Appleton 12 year recently.

Opened the Bacardi 8 and was underwhelmed.  I may need to use that as a mixer and open the Appleton 12.

Picked up a Mount Gay XO yesterday and tried it today. I think I like it more than the Seale's, but I need to do a SBS next time.

Bacardi 8 is horrible. There is only one good Bacardi, and that is the Bacardi Heritage edition white rum, made in Mexico. Perhaps the ultra-expensive limited conspicuous-consumption Bacardis might be good, but who cares at the prices they're asking?

Both are in the light Bajan style, but for me I think the Seale's has more flavor, costs less, and has a legitimate 10yr age statement. The XO is good, and I'd happily drink it any day, but it's too subtle for my tastes to be a preference.
