Hmmm, not all that surprising whenever one looks at the 'agrarian/industrial' world of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.    Slave labor was a fact of life well into the 19th century, and if not for the American Civil War may have continued for a few more decades than it did.    Also, not that hard to imagine powerful, slave-owning whites not wishing to offer much credit to their "property"; the people who were doing a great deal of the day-to-day work in the distilling business, and gaining the knowledge and skill to do it well.     Good for JD, whether they had altruistic reasons, or ones that are more marketing-driven.   The result is the same, I think.

Given the authenticity of their "150th Anniversary" to begin with, at least according to Chuck, one can only wonder how much PR spin this part of the story has as well. No doubt at least some.
