I’m heading to New Orleans next week for the first time in a while. Any tips from anyone on bars with good bourbon lists, stores with good selections or barrel picks? Did a little searching and hadn’t seen much that caught my eye yet. Thanks!

I would say the Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone would be high on my personal list as a must drinking spot. Good variety of Bourbon but not great. Of course you'd want a Saz anyway. :)

If you can’t get baby saz at home, NOLA has it everywhere for $22-25, or at least they did a couple years ago. Also, CEHT SmB is reasonable. Best price I saw was $32 at Costco. Good luck!

Don't know if you mean Saz the whiskey or Saz the cocktail but if I were at the Carousel Bar I would probably go with a Vieux Carre cocktail (I have in fact!) but it is a bit pricey as a place to drink whiskey neat. There are better (in my opinion anyway) places to get a Vieux Carre but they are credited with creating it so it only seems proper to try one there!

Hi there, you'll have a great time in NOLA for sure.  There are many good bars that serve good whiskey, and exceptional cocktails in the city.  If you're a snob like me, and don't like drinking good stuff out of plastic cups, then it would be best to avoid most of the establishments either on, or near Bourbon street.

For good stuff, in actual glasses, I recommend one bar in particular, which is a tad bit off the beaten path.  They advertise 288 whiskeys on their menu.  Here's the link-  http://www.barrelproofnola.com/menu/ They have some food options, mostly street style.

Carousel bar is a great choice in the quarter for certain, and I do recommend it for cocktails and the incredible ambience.  Woodford is pretty standard here.  Another must is the Sazerac Bar in the Hotel Roosevelt.  Not much for whiskey selection, they do make the very best Sazerac in the city, and the bar itself is an incredible work of art.  Here's the link- http://therooseveltneworleans.com/dining/the-sazerac-bar.html

And lastly, a place that has a good whiskey selection, and tremendous food.  https://cochonrestaurant.com

Hope that helps, have a terrific trip!

Looks like Cochon and Barrel Proof are an easy walk from our location. My in-laws just bought a vacation home condo within 2-3 blocks of the Cochon place. Not necessarily a whiskey place but are you familiar with Peche at all? Thanks!

That's great with the location of the vacation home.  You're not far from Barrel Proof, or from the excellent coffee shop across the street.  https://frenchtruckcoffee.com/1200-magazine-street

I am quite familiar with Peche.  Peche and Cochon are part of the same restaurant group.  This might sound absurd as a recommendation for a seafood place, but trust me that you have to order the fried bread with sea salt.  Their seafood gumbo compares favorably to just about any in the city.

Since you're going to be there, check out https://noladistilling.com/# They are mostly doing sweet potato vodka right now, but they have 50 barrels of whiskey that is aging.

Ok, cool.  Enjoy your time.  The WW II museum is a great place to visit if you are in to museums of that type.

A good time was had in Nola this weekend. We didn’t end up with too much specific whiskey focus but I was pleased to see some decent whiskey on the shelves of a local liquor store (Blanton’s, Stagg Jr, etc.). I also enjoyed a nice SBS of 17 Saz 18 and 16 VWFRR at Emeril’s.

Excellent. Still kind of chuckling at the pic. Don't know if you've sampled and snapped the pic or this is the way they were served? Rocks glass on the left and tumbler on the right. Was the 18yr Saz so common in NOLA they poured a solid 1 1/2 in a tumbler? How sweet it is. :)

I took that pic indeed. Pretty sure it was a 2 ounce pour of Saz. The VWFRR in the smaller glass was smaller because the bartender gave me a small pour of it for free after we talked about a few whiskey topics.
