Postal Grunt
Bloomberg Businessweek has dug up a few new comments on the PVW theft from the BT distillery. Nothing was glamorous about this heist. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-06-29/the-pappy-van-winkle-bandit-speaks-and-says-he-didn-t-do-it?utm_campaign=7.1%3A+Boardshorts+(PJSCH5)&utm_medium=email&_ke=eyJrbF9lbWFpbCI6ICJjbmpndW1ieUBnbWFpbC5jb20iLCAia2xfY29tcGFueV9pZCI6ICJiVnZ2QmUifQ%3D%3D&utm_source=Newsletter+-+US+Central
Richnimrod
The article seems to espouse the belief that Bourbon (and/or other spirits?) taken from the Buffalo Trace Distillery by Curtsinger (and others, by several accounts) was "unwanted"; or somehow 'permitted' to be removed by C. This is, on it's face, utter BS. Whether or not any of it was 'Pappy' is of great interest to some (most?); but, not pertinent to the crime(s). BT says it was missing 200-bottles of Pappy. Because Mr. Curtsinger implies he was permitted... or because nobody seems to have 'serial numbers' or whatever, doesn't mean they didn't exist, or that they weren't pilfered. And, the WT barrels full of Bourbon in Curtsinger's back yard are obvious evidence of a crime, if not of a 'mastermind' intellect behind said crime. The fact that Toby wants folx to believe he's not really a bad guy makes him extremely typical of convicted criminals. ...Just sayin'...
Soberiquet
I thought it was silly that the article implies that Sazerac cooked the whole thing up for publicity. It is not like the pappy brand needs the extra attention that they would resort to something like this.
Postal Grunt
I agree that the guy wasn't from the top ranks of the gene pool. Other articles have mentioned that he was also involved in moving bootleg steroids. It does appear that BT has done a lot to improve their inventory control over the past few years. If you've been receiving BT's email newsletter, you've probably read about the security measures they've installed to control access to warehouses and the use of RFID chips account for product entering or leaving the warehouses. Whether or not the missing Pappy was the motivation for the measures doesn't matter. They're just taking care of business.
