I love fall for a lot of reasons:  cooler weather, football, playoff baseball and of course bourbon.

So, what did you open today?

I opened up a 4R 2016 SmB LE, a Christmas gift from 2016 from my sweetheart.

Man, why did I wait almost two years to open this bottle?  This is crazy good.

Cheers

Your experience withe the '16 4-R SmBLE is a perfect example of why one should at least consider opening every Bourbon, regardless of (or because of!) it's rarity or perceived "value".    One can only appreciate the stuff in one's mouth!   ...Not on one's shelf; or at least not very completely that way.

I love fall for all those reasons too. I opened and emptied a fun size WT101

So why did you wait almost 2 years for a random Monday to open that bottle of amazing?

You know, funny you mention that bottle.

I didn't appreciate this one as much right away, because the 2015 was so good, and I was upset about Jim leaving.  But coming back to it now, I have recently developed an appreciation for how darn good it is.

Enjoy every sip!

Opened this up to compare to the bottom of a SAOS SB. I’m surprised how different they are. I get a lot less vanilla and traits I associate with MGP from the BM. It has much more wood, leather not as sweet. It reminds me of a really good KC SB but with a much better finish. Also I assume the BM Reserve is younger than the SAOS buy tasted older. Weird.

Today has been a difficult day, I decided that it was a good day to dig something out of the back of the bunker, I knew there would be risks involved but the end result is rewarding nonetheless.

Wanted something lower proof to end the night, and found this laying around so I opened it up.  Still has dust on the bottle

The other thing to keep in mind is that the mashbills might be different.

Belle (as far as Ive researched) has always used/sourced the mgp high rye mash.

Smooth Ambler has used both the high and low rye mash, and it can sometimes be hard to figure out which one is in your bottle.

After tasting numerous SAOS bottles, I can sometimes make educated guesses regarding which mashbill it is, but they are just that -guesses.

Your BM reserve is a blend of different barrrels, including some younger and some older to make a batch.

i believe BM recently switched to this blend as their older stocks are being depleted and the prices of sourced mgp barrels are at an all time high.  I don’t think it’s practical (financially) for anyone to put out older aged mgp single barrels anymore  on a mass scale at reasonable prices.

For an even closer comparison, you could try to find a BM single barrel 10y.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think I remember seeing that all of the SAOS SiB are the high rye recipe? I thought it was just the SAOS Ten that was the low rye.

Opened an EHTBP 135.4 proof. (Not sure what batch that is).

As I was opening it, the cork started to break. I was able to save it and extract the cork without a full break.

For anyone who wants to know - an Eagle Rare 10yr cork works just fine as a substitute for EHT bottles.l

RRSiB PS.

I am celebrating OU-Texas weekend by opening a State of Oklahoma pick.  We don't get many RRSiB in The Great State of Oklahoma. But the picks we get sure are good and this one in no exception. I look forward to comparing this bottle to the latest WTRB (which I think is just  awesome.)

Beat Texas!

Cracked open a newly purchased HH BIB, 'cause it had been a while.  I gotta say, I think this stuff is better now that it was even a year ago!  Too bad...

Ha!  Love you guys.  I used to make quarterly biz trips to Shreveport for a couple of years some time ago, and would stay at the Horseshoe.  Always hit the casino after dinner.  I remember sitting in the packed Casino late one night playing blackjack during the week of the UT/OU...uh...OU/UT :D  game, when a BOOMER!!!...SOONER!!!  chant broke out in response to the Texas folks getting rowdy.  Couldn’t hear yourself think.  Great fun.

Opened a great Dekalb Bottle House PS Buffalo Trace, tonight.  Earthy and polished wood goodness.

Haha, that sounds like a good time. Boomer Sooner & Fight Texas make for great chants for sure. ;-))

We live for & love our football. :-))

The game with Texas, is always fun & most always nerve racking.

Anyone who likes college football should attend an OU-Texas game at the Cotton Bowl. It is a true College Classic Spectacle & a great time.

Back on topic how is the Dekalb BT?  The  BT PS I have had the pleasure of sipping have been amazing. (Albeit not very many selections.)

Cheers

Indeed.  I  feel like this game doesn't get the national attention it deserves.  (Although I think Gameday is there today for a change.)  And the fact it is played inside the state fair going on at the same time adds to the spectacle.
