Trying my first store pick of KC this Friday evening.  In my opinion it is an excellent bottle, and I may have to pick up a couple more.

EC23 in a Glencairn. I can taste smoke, leather, sawdust and the earth. It’s fantastic. And the taste lasts and lasts.

Smoke, leather, sawdust, and the earth...

Sounds spiritual in a 4 Pillars of Life of the tribe kinda way...

Only one way for a man to answer that...  :D

Here's how I know I have an unrefined bourbon flavor palette.

Those flavors sound horrible.

Nothing else to contribute, I'm on Rum today. ;)

I did buy a bourbon, if that counts. (This'll be a new WT for me to try)1557612735043.jpg

@smokinjoehit it with the spiritual thing. Mother earth?  Lord help me, I better check my Prius to make sure all the appropriate bumper stickers are affixed. :)

Not bourbon.

It has supplanted Rittenhouse as my go-to cheap rye.

Enjoy those moments when you can! I've had plenty of whiskies that I love, but the "spiritual" ones, though few, are very memorable. Glad you found one!

Must be some of their house distilled bourbon.

I'm with you.  Meh.

The rye is where they really seem to be shining!

Having some Ezra B 12yr SB bottled in '14. Many years ago I had one from '05 that was pretty boring, but this one is outstanding. The joys of single barrels.......

It was a lottery win that cost me $200 last year that I’m finally getting around to enjoying.  And since I’m not likely ever going to get to replace it I’m going to savor it.

It's cold, it's rainy, which means it's perfect weather for the Western Conference Final to get underway. Seems like a good excuse to kick things off with a local store pick of WTKS. With the price now exceeding RRSiB, this will likely be my last.

Referring to DCFan's description of a particular bourbon having

Smoke, leather, sawdust, and the earth...

Sounds spiritual in a 4 Pillars of Life of the tribe kinda way...

jwperry responded,  " Here's how I know I have an unrefined bourbon flavor palette.  Those flavors sound horrible."

Uh, a "palette" has paint on it which - TRUST ME - never tastes good when stuck in your mouth while "palate" refers to, loosely, a person's appreciation of flavor.  WHATEVER!!  Where was I??  Oh, yeah -- A New York Times article describes research into how we each have a different hard-wired/DNA response to whiskey smells and tastes, i.e., we each have a different palate.  THIS explains WHY some of us LOVE HH stuff while others LOVE WT and still others LOVE Beam and a few of us LOVE Saz/BT

SEE Heather Murphy's "You Will Never Smell My World the Way I Do", online May 3, 2019, discussing whiskey smelling. (The link wouldn't copy, so you'll have to go to nytimes.com and type those words into the SEARCH box.)

In other words, DO NOT BE HARD on yourself.  For instance, I think Old Ezra 101 proof 7 Year Old reminds me of Autumn leaf mold, turned garden dirt, mushrooms, and compost pile rot - a group of tastes and smells that remind me of Mother Earth -- so much so that, when I heard bottom shelf OE 101 7YR was being discontinued, I bought EVERY bottle I could find (alas, not all that many).

The above was typed as I sipped on a much-too-large pour of basic BT - I craved that candy apple/cinnamon hit tonight.

Raised a glass of John J Bowman to my favorite puppy dog. She lived a long beautiful 15 years and I’ll cherish her memory. Cheers Mocha... Rest In Peace my friend. IMG_1784.jpg

Rye night.  CEHT Straight Rye followed by some RR 6 y.o. Rye.  Both good but the winner was the CEHT.
