Can you enlighten poor uninformed me about the brand of cola you mention above? Sorry, I should have been more specific - I meant cola as a general taste and clovey like the clove spice. Whereas some bourbons described as tasting like cola are often cherry cola or have more dark fruit flavor, this to me is less fruit and more baking spice. smokinjoe Posted January 30, 2020 Share Posted January 30, 2020 The Maker’s Cask Strength holds its own against ECBP, Stagg Jr., and other more talked about barrel proofers, for my tastes. The by-design mild finish of regular Maker’s, which may be the biggest complaint of that whiskey by many, is certainly amped up nicely at the higher proof. Fully flavored and with a bit more juiciness from this CS, too. For whatever reason, the bottle needs a little oxygen contact before it really comes alive. Glad you're enjoying that bottle! Meanwhile, after working with malt whisky all day, I'm starting cocktail hour with blood orange and my birthday bottle of Elijah Craig barrel strength batch C918, as well as a side of it neat. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I'm just now discovering how delicious EC is, but I can't seem to get enough of it now, and I'm really putting a hurtin' on this bottle! My understanding was it was just the bottle changed from being too similar to Woodford Reserve?My understanding was it was the name “Reserve” that was too similar to Woodford and not the bottling. I’m sure someone here that’s more certain can chime in. I was gifted one of those Total Wine bottles recently of Barton distillation. I think it was in between Barton and 1792 in age and at 95 proof. My last experience with Barton was a few years back and not pleasant but I kind of liked this TW bottle. Bob_Loblaw Posted January 31, 2020 Share Posted January 31, 2020 What a night! 3x SBS of Weller Full Proof store picks. The Blaum is a Founder’s Stash 12 year 120pf. This is bottle 34/34 from the barrel. Dark in color, deep and rich MGP nose and loads of layers on the palate. Truly Magnificent, and I saved half my pour for the end. Then had pours of ‘18 EH4G, a Blaum 11 year pick, some Turkey 101 8yr, ‘16 OFBB, Litchfield Distillery (more cask strength MGP), WP 10 year Rye, a very good W107 pick, the 13 yr Dickel BiB. Maybe a few more. The Dickel was the only real dud, very VL. The minerality just doesn’t do it for me. I brought Larceny BP, ECBP C919, a non store pick WFP, and the final sips from a honey JD Barrel, but I didn’t drink those since they were all my bottles. We also had 6 or so ER picks that we never even got to. Can’t go back down the Proof ladder! Finished with the Blaum. Other great pours were offered (AY50, WLW, PVW15) but at this point my palate was pretty shot and I was not sober enough to truly appreciate them.
