Drove from NJ to Nashville. Took rt 81 south through PA, VA, into eastern TN. Then drove west on rt 40.  WOW, the Smokey Mountains are magnificent.

Tasted at Nelsons Green Brier distillery in Nashville as there was no tour available. First visit to a distillery for me (wife and daughter too). Tasted the NGB TN whiskey, Belle Meade bourbon, and 2 Belle Meade finished bourbons.  Nice little distillery, learned a few things. Right next to the Marathon Auto factory/museum which was interesting to see too.

Left Nashville and drove up to Louisville. Toured Old Forester Tuesday morning. This was a really good tour and tasting.  Tour guide was very knowledgeable and we got to see and experience a lot on the tour. My wife and daughter actually enjoyed this tour. Got to taste 4 bourbons. All I’ve had before but the one I purchased.

After the Old Forester tour, we got lunch, then went on the Kentucky Peerless tour Tuesday afternoon. This was a little disappointing after the OF tour. This was more like a lecture though we did get to see some of the facility.

On Weds we drove to Lawrenceburg for a morning Four Roses tour and tasting. The tour was good but the distillery was shut down for the summer so we didn’t get to see it in operation.  We were kind of restricted to areas that they weren’t doing maintenance. Very different than the Louisville distilleries, got to walk into some of the buildings on the campus. I like Four Roses anything so I was very interested in this tour.

After leaving Four Roses, we drove around a bit looking for something else to do in the afternoon. Saw a sign for Buffalo Trace and decided to follow (wife’s idea). I tried to get a tour reservation at BT a few weeks ago and they were all full. We drove in to see what we could see and if there was anything we could do.  Am I glad we did. Not only did they have tours, they had one that we could go on when we arrived. We did the Trace Tour (free) and it was the best tour and tasting of the trip. Got to see a lot of the old distillery buildings, go in them, and our tour guide was excellent. Even got to see some of the new construction going on there now including the new huge column still as they were building  the skeleton of the new building around it. As a bonus, they were just putting out new Blantons bottles so the three of us were able to purchase one. Oh, and if you go, try mixing their Bourbon Cream 50/50 with their root beer. Delicious!

After Buffalo Trace, we found a little winery, Rising Sons Winery. Visited there for a tasting (one of my wife’s to-do’s) and some wine purchases. Then headed to our hotel in Lawrenceburg.

On Thursday morning, we went to Wild Turkey for a tasting (no tour). Glad we didn’t tour because it was pouring buckets of rain.  Tasting was like a lecture and the guide could have been more knowledgeable.  They gave us .5oz pours of Kentucky Spirit, RR10, and Rare Breed Rye. I’ve had the KS and RR before but first time trying the rye and it was excellent. We had the first tasting of the day and got to Wild Turkey just after they opened and wondered why there was a long procession of cars that followed us into the lot - much more than could be going to a tasting or tour. At check-in, the guy asked me if I like RR. I said yes. He told me they just got RR13 in and if I want one, I should get it now because it will sell out soon. I did. And It was sold out after we were done with the tasting 45 mins later.

After the Wild Turkey tasting, we drove up to Chicago to visit my son for the weekend. Bourbon tour over.

A quote from the movie “The Right Stuff” seems very appropriate. “F**kin’ A Bubba.”  Very happy you had a nice trip, and returned home with some good bourbons. Thanks for the pics and commentary. 👌

Nicely done!  I hope you enjoyed yourselves enough to come back again. There’s still plenty to see, including the three most beautiful campuses (IMO) in the Commonwealth (MM, Woodford and Castle and Key).

Absolutely! Plenty more to see that I want to see.

  • 2 weeks later...

And don't forget a couple of my local favorites, Willett and Bardstown Bourbon Company.  Both are great places to visit and especially to enjoy a meal.
