I use Del Maguey Vida. It’s inexpensive and all I’m really after is the smoke.

I’m sure there are other more informed opinions.

Vida is adequate for most things, relatively available, and as noted relatively inexpensive. No point in putting a better quality and more expensive mezcal in most cocktails. If you wants lots of smoke consider Sombra.

Been wanting to make this for some time now.  It’s a Date Old Fashioned. I guess that sounds like a life lesson. Anyway, made the simple syrup with date sugar. Garnished with a jumbo medjool. I think it’s living up to expectations. But that might be just the MM101.

Did something similar yesterday,  with the WT101 rye,  in a couple of Old Fashioneds .

Mrs. Skinsfan always has two cherries in her drink too😉

I'm gonna post this in the Cocktail 2022 thread but the Julep needs its own thread every year.  It's an iconic bourbon drink that many people don't touch outside of the first Saturday in May (myself included).   Next year I'll remember to start a new thread if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

I'm sure I've posted this link before, but if you hate juleps and think you'll never drink one, watch this guy's pitch and give it a shot next Derby Day.

The best julep I ever saw personally prepared was in Sydney, Australia and used Booker's.   I prepared them for Americans in Dusseldorf, Germany on Derby Day years ago using a pillow case and  probably a frying pan to crush the ice.  It's a drink unsuited to my palate and one that I love.

This recipe was handwritten for me by the barkeep at Attaboy in NYC a couple of weeks ago.  Attaboy is the successor bar to Milk and Honey which was one of the founding bars of the cocktail renaissance.  It remains a bar without a set menu (and with no vodka) and is still one of NYC's outstanding cocktail destinations.  The recipe is significantly sweeter than any other I've used.  That said, it's great and of course it helps if you use an older woodier bourbon.

Now the next new thread should be:

Will Rich Strike win the Triple Crown?

What a story that would be!

I will definitely try that recipe! I'm in the group of only the first Saturday in May. I always enjoy having a few on Derby Day but never give it a thought otherwise. 😏

One of the girls in our group had the foresight to put a nice bet on Rich Strike. At 80:1, a nice payoff indeed!!

Prost!!  Phil

Littlesmokinjoe and I took Mrssmokinjoe out for Mother’s Day Dinner.  Cloudy and cool for most of the day, but the skies parted and Sun and 72 made for perfect conditions on the patio.  Started the festivities with LSJ’s Aviation, MSJ’s Cosmo, and my Negroni.

COLORFUL!!  😂

I have been ordered to procure a creme de violette for family cocktail hours this Summer.  🤪

I recommend Rothman & Winter C de V.  Used for a large (50+) gathering a few years back (Aviation cocktails and some variations for a violet theme).  Edit - Rothman does not lead a second “n”.

I’m going “Naked and Famous”, tonight.  🤗

3/4 oz Mezcal (Del Maguey Vida)

3/4 oz Yellow Chartreuse

3/4 oz Aperol

3/4 oz Lime Juice

Shake with ice and strain into a coupe glass.

Garnish with lime twist.

Happy World Cocktail Day! Unfortunately, I’m too lazy to make a cocktail tonight. Probably just sip some bourbon.

So, got the Creme de Violette, and made the Aviation to drink while I throw peanuts in the shell to the chipmunks.  (Side note to this activity: If you whistle “ I Got Friends in low Places”, they will line up and take them from your hand.  And, that will be the highlight of your day!  🤪)

3 parts Gin

1 part Maraschino Liqueur

1 part lemon juice

1 bar spoon Creme de Violette

Serve up in a coupe

garnish with cherry

I was thinking that only a bar spoon of the Violette would not be enough, but there is a ton of violet flavor in it, so plenty to hold it’s own.

It’s a nice drink, and I can see why Littlesmokinjoe likes it.  Very floral,  but the citrus keeps it from being cloyingly sweet.  Plus, it’s pretty.  😁
