Wild Turkey 101 8yr Jimmy Russell 70th Anniversary release
Kepler replied to flahute's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
I've had the WT 70th Anniversary but not the new USA WT8/101 yet. I agree with Steve that I don't consider the 70th as having any "funky" tasting notes. I assume the new 8 year will be available here in Texas soon enough and I can compare them myself. -

I believe there are some comparison reviews on the internet and one of our own SB members has just posted some feedback here in the "What bourbon are you drinking" thread What bourbon are you drinking Spring 2025 -

flahute replied to flahute's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
I think the new one is only in a few markets as we are early in the rollout so not sure how many of us have both. I do not. I did ask one of the WT senior brand builders how they compared and he said that while different, if you liked the 70th you will also like the new one. Good news for me as I've gone through quite a few of the 70th. I don't think it's at all funky. -

No OF 100 for the BOTM thread so a pour of OFSBBS rye for Fryeday night in the rain. Looking like a wet Friday/Sat so bet the “mudders” in tomorrow’s Derby. It may be a sit home and watch rather than going to the track tomorrow. Either way there will be Juleps on the day. Cheers! - Today

I know it's Fryeday, but I'm not feeling it tonight. I'm always sad to see these go and I don't have a replacement. I might have to break into the 18.... -
Wild Turkey 101 8yr Jimmy Russell 70th Anniversary release
BourbonGuy replied to flahute's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
How does the Wild Turkey 101 8yr Jimmy Russell 70th Anniversary release compare to the newly released 8 Year. I have never seen or tried the 70th Anniversary release. But saw the 8 year old for $40 tonight for the first time. I asked the guy working the bourbon section and he said the 70 Annisversary was "funky" and the 8 year was "sweeter". Hmmmm... So I figured I come here to ask. -
I purchased a Saints Alley Nobleman rye recently after seeing some favorable local reviews. I haven't opened it yet. In my glass tonight is Old Forester 100 Rye and it's singing. Happy fRYEday.

I certainly get what you mean, but... I mean .. if it's free...? -
Just cracked one of my absolute favorites this evening, in honor of this month's SB Bottle of The Month. Great choice.

That's a great one too.

Awesome choice for BOTM @Jazz June! This thread made me crack open a new bottle from the bunker, as it's been a minute since I had one open on my bar. That unfortunate situation has been rectified now. I agree with everything written above (and great tasting notes @PaulO ... your notes captured what I taste but could not articulate myself). And I'll take things a step further. In my opinion, this is the best "budget" American whiskey on the market. Not just in the rye category, but including bourbons too. Define "budget whiskey" however you want, but to me the price has to top out at 25 bucks in most markets. My other main contender would be WT101, but in my opinion this OF100 Rye does rye even better than WT101 does bourbon. That's saying something coming from me! I really love this whiskey.

Beautiful bottle.

It’s fRYEday. Another 2015 bites the dust. Creaminess and delicate baking spice rounds out an initial herbal note in this wonderful pour. A gentle hug highlights the complexity of this whiskey at an appropriate and approachable 90p. This was allegedly the last of the old tanked Saz18 before it switched to BT distillate. Quite the special pour.

Although, I understand the reluctance to offer rare pours to folx that wouldn't appreciate 'em; I do not recommend scamming anybody the way you described (I think maybe you were shinin' us one there?). If you really are considering it, I say; Don't. It's bad karma. Offer it to 'em in highballs or some other easy-drinking combination. If they don't know the difference anyway, they'll probably like it fine that way. -

Just bought and opened a Smooth Ambler Old Scout 99 proof. NAS. Supposedly MGP juice. Second bottle that I have considered pouring out (first was called Beams). Awful. Tastes like a weak scotch!! $40 bucks wasted. Could of bought a 1L KC9. Might consider putting it in a quality bourbon bottle and let my many BIL's drink it with glee!! -

BOTM 05/2025 Old Forester Rye
Richnimrod replied to Jazz June's topic in Straight Bourbon Of The Month
I hafta agree with about everything said above. OF 100-proof Rye is a fine pour! ...AT a very 'approachable' price, too. Good stuff. Good Price. I have one open and love it in the couple cocktails I've tried with it or over a cube, or as a slow, thoughtful, neat sipper. -

What Bourbon Did You Pass On 2025?
PaulO replied to fishnbowljoe's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
Oh, I almost forgot to mention, the other day I saw Willett Pot Still multiple bottles on the shelf 750ml and 1.75L (the big bong bottle ). The family sise was over $100, I think $110 or so. I don't really care. It's just the novelty of seeing unusual stuff. I must have beat the taters to the store that day. They can have it all. Meanwhile keep their paws off my JW Dant and OF Rye. -
I'm a big fan of the Old Forester Rye. The way I'd describe it - the Old Forester house style cranked up to eleven. (Some will get the reference.) There's really a lot going on here. I get flavors of dark rye bread, molasses cookie, apricot, citrus - sort of reminds me of the first couple years of Signature Bourbon. The nose lets you know this is a big whiskey. It's an outlier, unique, not derivative of other ryes. I give B-F credit for bottling this at 100 proof, and not marketing it as boutique luxury product.

Called in a couple birds. They were fighting for my attention so I took a shot at both of them. For the nose, i give the 70th the win by a beak. The palate, The 70th wins with a better beard and wattle. The finish, you prolly guessed it, The 70th wins by the snood and tail coverts. Obviously the winner is the 70th and I give it 18 tail feathers. Seeing how the 70th is basically gone, I will grab a btl or 2 of the 8yr when i find it. Would like to do a sbs with WTKS and the 70th, maybe next time I'm at the bar. Then I would like to do a sbs with The Original Kicking Chicken (WT 101) and the 8yr. Note to self, I prolly should do that before I buy the 8yr. -

kcgumbohead replied to Mattk's topic in American Rye Whiskey
My lone Woodinville SBBS is nearly empty maybe 1.5 pours left. This has been a bit of a chameleon bottle but in a good way in that its many personalities have all been quite enjoyable. Near its end the ryeness is really stepping forward as a well defined flavor that reminds me a bit of the Starlight rye in its purity of rye flavor. It’s been a good one and I’m ready to crack and enjoy something new in the coming weeks.
