  2. Blue Monday... Started with a JB Black 7yr, not bad. Moved onto a George Remus Blend that was very nice last week, but not feeling it today. Didn't care about higher proof or complexity, but needed a more balanced pour: Blanton's Gold to the rescue. Not because I deserved it but because I felt like, I'm Taking It...

    Empty Bottle Suport Group 2024

This has been a very nice bottle of whiskey. Everything I look for in the Beam profile, plus the healthy proof. I’m pretty sure I can count on one hand how many Booker’s I’ve purchased over the years, but my next bottle will come in a much shorter time than any two of the preceding.

What Bourbon Did You Pass On 2024

I passed on a ton of great whiskey this past Saturday at the Little Creek PX in Va Beach. Not because of the prices, (which were fantastic), but I've been trying to reel in buying until I whittle down the bunker. I id snag a few bottles, but passed on a ton. Like I stated earlier, I'm not very good at "not" buying...

What bourbon are you drinking this Spring - 2024

Sitting in Clyde’s Chevy Chase waiting for my wife to join me for lunch - she’s an hour away so . . . Started with a neat Blanton’s. Noticed that New Riff Bonded is used in a cocktail. Bartender gave me a taste. NOW I know why you all rave about it. Nice spice kick but no overriding heat. Complex flavors blend nicely. Going to order a couple of cups of coffee so I can be a wide awake drunk and have another. THAT NR was exquisite! And it is not the Blanton’s typing. Had to pass on the basic BT which I love and the tender knows I do. Also passed on a couple iterations of MM behind the bar. BTW, Clyde’s now uses 4RYL as their rail bourbon so if you are ever in WDC at a Clyde’s, . . . .

What did you purchase this Spring? (2024)

I drive through Port Royal, Tappahannock, via 3 & 17 on the way to VA Beach. I hit the ABC store near the Potomac River Bridge. The OGD was $21.00 and the Bulleit 10 year was on sale, but the closest store to them that had the Bulleit 10 year in stock was Colonial Beach. I like it, but not enough to drive 13 miles out of my way for it. The rest of the bottles I bought on base at the PX in Little Creek. I really, really suck at not buying.....

What Bourbon Did You Pass On 2024

I found a JD 12yr the other day but it was an easy pass at $370. There were several other allocated bottles on the shelf at similar crazy markups that I had to pass on as well. I did find another Camp Nelson barrel of WTKS, but since it was from the same warehouse and rick, just a different barrel as the one I bough last week(which I am initially not fond of it's unusually spicy finish), I opted to pass while I pondered if I should go back and pick it up. Also found plenty of HM10, Larceny BP A124, & ECBP A124 that I passed on. I will wait to see if the "B" batches of both get better reviews before making a decision on whether or not to pick up the "A" batches.

What did you purchase this Spring? (2024)

was out running errands Saturday afternoon and stopped by a few LS. I did end up grabbing a Green River wheated after passing on lots of other bottles that afternoon.

    Chi-Town!

Def gonna check out both. My buddy, who’s a Bears fan and travels to Chicago a lot, recommended Delilah’s as well. Thanks. The Google machine says GSL was acquired by Binny’s in 1999. Will do! Thanks.

    What happened with SAOS

Good Question. Those would have been released somewhere around what, 2018 or 19? The only bottle I ever tried was from 2020. It had a distinctly different profile to it than most other MGP bourbon. Almost a bread like profile. Probably something to do with aging location in the desert, but who knows. I believe Smoke Wagon had some early single barrel store picks that were the old MGP bourbon.

    What happened with SAOS

No, those were all from the same run back in 2015-16-17. There were two different mash bills IIRC, a low rye and high rye, with the high being more prevalent. What I'm saying is that the new MGP stuff on the shelf that is 4-7 years old, the rye recipe bourbon, it's not the same. It's not as good. Blame it on the grain, distilling process, warehouse location, barrel type/mfg, seasonal temps, dumb luck, them rushing production, whatever. That good old MGP bourbon is gone. The new stuff just doesn't have that same profile, regardless of mash bill. Some of it is fine/good, but it's definitely not the same as it used to be. You might find a hint of the old stuff in Volstead, Gatsby, and even blended into some of the Remus Reserve. I really liked the Volstead, but I think that was the turning point. Gatsby was too long in the barrel and came out somewhat bitter and over aged IMO.
  15. The saw's not plugged in, and the bottle is unopened. In my defense, you could consider both objects to be inert at the moment. Considering that I only yesterday topped off my chainsaw fuel tank with bar and chain oil while completely sober, you may rest assured I will never mix spinning or otherwise moving sharp things with 100 proof whiskey.

    Empty Bottle Suport Group 2024

I agree with you. Not only that, but while working in OKC from 2010 into 2014 I came across a number of EWSB from 1999 through 2002, of which I still have 6 or 7. Pat

Great catch! Missed it but awesome!
  19. Killed the bottle of Old Mo Fo 100. Going to finish the weekend with a pour of Free Willy. Willett Family Estate.

What rye are you drinking or purchased 2024

I've often wondered if this is what pre-Prohibition PA rye really tasted like. I mean, who's around to know? Doesn't matter, it's good.
  21. Yesterday
  22. Tonight I'm having a pour of oo11. It is one of the best ryes I've had from JB. Rich in flavor and light in proof, this rye sits just perfectly for a rainy Sunday evening.
  23. I don't know if I'm any type of expert, but certainly quite the enthusiast. Thanks though, glad to be here.
  24. For you Commonwealth residents, the OGD BiB and the Uncle Nearest 1856 are both on sale at the ABC stores. The OGD was $3.00 off and the Remus was $10.00 off...
  25. Cross post from the "drinking" thread. Mrs. Skinsfan is having the Old Fashioned, with WT101 as the base...I'm too lazy to post her drink in the cocktails thread
  26. Always wanted to try this one. I've never seen it at a bar to try, but it was on sale.

What did you purchase this Spring? (2024)

I, too, hit the VA ABC this weekend. 4RYL was on sale and in stock at a shade under $20 so I bought a few to get ready for Summer.
