What did you purchase this Spring? (2024)
Cibsie replied to markandrex's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
That would be greatly preferred if they can find a "fair" way to do this, I could tell that I'm getting too old to be waiting in these lines. For now, I'll deal with it since I've never won a raffle and these events are the only place I've gotten decent bottles. I know if these were raffled, I would not have gotten the email and would be stuck paying 50+ for a pour since there's no way I'd drop a grand to get one on the secondary market. Hopefully we'll be cracking this in the next few weeks and I'll post some notes. If it's anywhere near how great HH17 was, this bottle may not last too long. -

Wow, you certainly found some choice bottles. Both of those brands are very good. Nice scores. Thank you. I haven’t stumbled upon an older bottle in a while, but the hope of doing so, makes me stop and shop at stores new to me. Cheers -

I’m not sure if they are the same mashbill. The EW BIB seems to be the easiest to find, and most of the guys here in our group prefer it. IMHO, my blend is pretty decent. I get to have some fun, and I also share a lot. -

WTKS in the glass. It was a good Preakness, several bets went my way. Pics later this week once I have collected. -

Both sound great I love both OBSK and OESK. However, why I typically like higher rye bourbons better, I have always preferred OESK. On the FR recipe tree, while I have had all 10 at one point or another, I find OBSV (BP), OESK, OBSK, OBSQ, OBSV 100 proof to be my favorites. The only yeast variations that I do not care for are the O's...OBSO and OESO. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't kick them out of my glass but they would be at the bottom of the SiB BP list for me. -

I opened the evening with a nice pour of Sazerac Rye. It has been stellar lately. It would be more stellar at 100 proof. Just saying. Followed up with a nicer pour of WT101. It would be stellar at...well, it is already stellar. -

Sounds like one of my old girlfriends on our first date. First hour...she has a weird smile. Second hour (after a couple of beers)...her smile is not so bad but she talks about stupid shit. Third hour...(after a few more beers)...I stopped listening to her yappering but she is sort of cute. Fourth hour...(finished the 12 pack)...she reminds me of Christy Brinkley. 12 hours later...WTF was I thinking. I gotta get out of here. 3 months later...where did I put her phone number? -

Yet, the old dude that was the clerk was really scary. I suspect one day we will read that he was a mass murderer in the '50s. -

Your purchases would make @PaulO proud and Heaven Hill happy. Just curious, do you have a preference? I guess this is a silly question. Are they the same mashbill? -

I actually stopped at Binny’s for something else, then changed my mind. What can I say? Not HH 18, but HH nonetheless. I’ve been sharing my HH BIB Blend lately at our bourbon/beer/cigar get togethers. Even though I have a half a handle left, I figured I’d get prepared. “Know what I mean Vern?” - Yesterday

Cool. I didn't know Dickel distilled their own rye. Dickel rye was always MGP rye, correct? When did they start making their own?

I just remember when a lot of us on here used to say that the old Baker's 7 yr "Small Batch" was not a good value at $45. The majority of bourbon enthusiasts passed on it, saying it was a victim of being the 'odd man out' in comparison to Knob Creek and Booker's (back when Booker's was $50). The old Baker's bottle became a shelf turd and we all saw dust collecting on those black wax tops. I'm somewhat guilty too, but for me the bottom line that made me wake up was always: anytime I ever drank Baker's 7 Small Batch, I always found it to be a damn good tasting bourbon. Absolutely every bit as good as KC or Booker's, but just different. Once I accepted that, then I started buying Baker's with no regrets whatsoever, price be damned. -

I get that the new Baker's single barrel is kinda polarizing (I struggle with it myself, but for me I think it's probably due to a hangup I have in comparison to the old "Small Batch" bottle which I absolutely loved). Curious, what bourbons do you purchase repeatedly at around $60 that are better? Or maybe to be fair, maybe my question should be $40-60 that are better (since 40 was the old price that we loved)? I can only think of a couple myself but I'm probably missing something. -

Relaxing on a Saturday afternoon. Strange (and unplanned) sbs comparison this afternoon. First pour was MM PS from Lincoln Road. I had a hankering for a high-proof wheater so when my eyes scanned the bar, that bottle sounded good so I grabbed it. Tasted great. Wanted another pour of it. Someone then asked me about the Four Roses OBSK recipe, so I pulled out my open bottle and had a short pour. My current open OBSK is an older Spec's store pick bottled in 2015 at 8 yrs 1 month. It's very good, but nothing special for a 4R store pick. I put OBSK somewhere in the upper middle of a ranking of my preferred recipes. Good, but not nearly my favorite. For this totally unplanned (and quite nonsensical) barrel proof SiB store pick SBS between a wheater and a high rye bourbon, I give the win to the MMPS Lincoln Road pick. For whatever that's worth, hehe -

I had not actually heard that about BCS -- I knew one of their chief brand guys left, but hadn't heard more details. Didn't know they listed the facility for sale. I'm a huge fan of their bourbon product so it would make me sad if they don't make it. Their business model (super-premium products offered continuously in very small individual batches) isn't really built to thrive during downturns in the market. These luxury brands need a solid lower priced 'flagship' product to hang their hat on. Barrell recently came out with their "Foundation" bourbon, which is a great offering, but I fear it might have been a too little/too late situation. Time will tell I guess.
