Good Question. Those would have been released somewhere around what, 2018 or 19? The only bottle I ever tried was from 2020. It had a distinctly different profile to it than most other MGP bourbon. Almost a bread like profile. Probably something to do with aging location in the desert, but who knows. I believe Smoke Wagon had some early single barrel store picks that were the old MGP bourbon.

No, those were all from the same run back in 2015-16-17. There were two different mash bills IIRC, a low rye and high rye, with the high being more prevalent. What I'm saying is that the new MGP stuff on the shelf that is 4-7 years old, the rye recipe bourbon, it's not the same. It's not as good. Blame it on the grain, distilling process, warehouse location, barrel type/mfg, seasonal temps, dumb luck, them rushing production, whatever. That good old MGP bourbon is gone. The new stuff just doesn't have that same profile, regardless of mash bill. Some of it is fine/good, but it's definitely not the same as it used to be. You might find a hint of the old stuff in Volstead, Gatsby, and even blended into some of the Remus Reserve. I really liked the Volstead, but I think that was the turning point. Gatsby was too long in the barrel and came out somewhat bitter and over aged IMO.

What did you purchase this Spring? (2024)
Thomm replied to markandrex's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
The saw's not plugged in, and the bottle is unopened. In my defense, you could consider both objects to be inert at the moment. Considering that I only yesterday topped off my chainsaw fuel tank with bar and chain oil while completely sober, you may rest assured I will never mix spinning or otherwise moving sharp things with 100 proof whiskey. -

I agree with you. Not only that, but while working in OKC from 2010 into 2014 I came across a number of EWSB from 1999 through 2002, of which I still have 6 or 7. Pat -

What rye are you drinking or purchased 2024

I've often wondered if this is what pre-Prohibition PA rye really tasted like. I mean, who's around to know? Doesn't matter, it's good. - Yesterday

Tonight I'm having a pour of oo11. It is one of the best ryes I've had from JB. Rich in flavor and light in proof, this rye sits just perfectly for a rainy Sunday evening.

I don't know if I'm any type of expert, but certainly quite the enthusiast. Thanks though, glad to be here.

For you Commonwealth residents, the OGD BiB and the Uncle Nearest 1856 are both on sale at the ABC stores. The OGD was $3.00 off and the Remus was $10.00 off... -

Cross post from the "drinking" thread. Mrs. Skinsfan is having the Old Fashioned, with WT101 as the base...I'm too lazy to post her drink in the cocktails thread -

I, too, hit the VA ABC this weekend. 4RYL was on sale and in stock at a shade under $20 so I bought a few to get ready for Summer. -

I had a collection of pipes that I really liked to smoke. When I hung out at the smoke shop, I'd smoke cigars, but I was addicted to cigarettes.
-
Had I taken up smoking, I probably would have gone with a pipe instead of cigars (no cigarettes in any case... can't stand the taste or smell of the smoke). My childhood choirmaster smoked a pipe. I did respect him a lot. Even though both would involve various forms of mouth/throat cancer. I get that cigars have a different (and more appealing) flavor to them (i.e. just smelling the secondary smoke). But I just couldn't.
-
Good for you, I did smoke cigarettes, pipe, and cigars, but quit over 42 years ago. As it is, I still ended up with significant pulmonary disease. My PCP said if I hadn't quit, she wouldn't be seeing me. That said, sometimes I miss a quality cigar.

Agreed. There is a lot of better bourbon at that price point. MM101 is still my favorite and it's reasonably priced. -

I found this bottle, on a hot Oklahoma August day, while on a dusty hunt, many years ago in OKC. This bottle proves, a great whiskey doesn’t require to be high in proof. In fact, lower proofing exposes a whiskey’s insufficiencies. This whiskey was well crafted by Mr. Parker Beam. I will miss this exceptional bourbon. I’m glad I have the memory of finding this bottle in a tiny store, owned & operated by a mom and her daughter. True Americana. Cheers. -
