What Bourbon Did You Pass On 2024

Its min 2 yr. MGP. If it wasnt Chattanooga i wouldnt gamble but… before their own distillate was used, Chattanooga had some great 1816 products that consisted of some very young (min2 yr) MGP solera bottles. Hoping this is similar.

What Bourbon Did You Pass On 2024

I would pass a 2 year ago statement at any price to be honest...
  4. It always tastes better that way.

What Bourbon Did You Pass On 2024

May go back for it but passed on the chattanooga whiskey founders blend today. Ive liked most everything from these guys but $65 for a two year age statement made me want to check with you guys. Anybody had this one?
  6. I've seen some YouTube videos which show it. I'll see if I can find the specs on it.

    The Significance of "Batch Numbers..."

The stores in st louis actually have it available now
  8. Not yet. The Elijah Craig website only has the specs for A124 - Aged 10yrs, 9mo at 119pf. They probably haven't updated the site yet. Maybe not until it starts to drop onto retail stores.

    What’s on the menu????

My Little Wifey makes her recipe of City Chicken several times a year. It's a family favorite for sure. She swears it isn't "proper" without a mixture of pork loin and veal (another name for it is 'Veal Birds'). Personally, I don't think the 40 or 50% that's veal makes a damned bit of difference; but, that' just me. Wifey makes me a separate panful with my own gluten-free breading, so I can pig out on about 8-"drumsticks" over a couple meals... or even 2-meals plus a snack. MMMMMM!
  11. Thanks and good advice. I thought I was getting a great deal buying a highly rated cask strength store pick for $25 but the raters must have all been store employees.
  12. I decided to open up an older bottle of WFE. The whiskey is spectacular. The cork not so much. The end result is what matters. The bottle was a barrel selection by Crossroad Vintners who made several stellar picks from the Willett NDP barrel inventory. I remember attending a release event attended by Drew Kulsveen but that was a different WFE bottle that was one of my all-time favorite bottles. It's been so long I don't remember where this bottle came from. I am not certain the source. I bought it around 2013. I am guessing Heaven Hill because it resembles ECBP.
  13. Try it first. The store had 3 picks and the other 2 weren't good.
  14. They are in my backyard. Well, a little south. I have only tried one iteration several years ago. It was a store pick that was highly rated. It was a cask strength on clearance at half-price, $25. Cheap Bastard fail. I couldn't mix it with enough palatable whiskey to totally negate the strong overbearing alcohol profile. It ended up in a solara bottle. I was tempted to give it to my wife to remove nail polish. That was a long-term ago. It may be time to revisit.

    Cocktail Hour! - 2024

Nice! I had one last night before the starlight
  17. So I Lied !!! I said I was done buying for the spring. Well. I didn't even make 24 hours before becoming a liar. Damn! Grabbed a JB Black 7yr 1.75 from TW. (In the glass, now) Caramel Apple - Funk, on the nose. Palate looses the apple, but holds the sweet caramel, well. The peanut & funk aren't separate. It's a p'nut-JB funk as a combo. Sorta' a punk or p-funk thing. (shout out to George Clinton/Eddie Hazel) To me, hands down better than Old Tub. Will it replace my daily sippers? Not better than Bulleit 10 or VOB90, but very much so, better than the last bottle of George Remus that I've got. Something change in the GR & I had to blend it. Time will tell on that one. Is it a good change of pace sipper. You bet...
  18. I was gonna, honest! I just thought I'd show a little leg first, before the real show got started.

Grandpa, Tell Me 'Bout the Good Old Days

I thought Canon was lovely but I think some of those prices are to deter people from buying rather than the typical situation where they actually want to sell the whiskey. It’s more of a display collection.

    What’s on the menu????

When my mom made it, she’d make at least 5 skewers for me alone, because that was the minimum I was going to eat! I like the story behind the dish, too. As you know now, it’s not chicken at all, but rather pork loin that is cubed and skewered with wood, to mimic a chicken drumstick. It was created during the Great Depression, and at that time, chicken was significantly more expensive than pork. So, as they always did during that time…they improvised! By using pork on a stick instead of real chicken fried legs. I doubt my mom’s recipe was hers, as her family had a sufficiently sustainable small business during the Depression, and probably could have afforded the chicken. Most likely, it came from my dad’s side of the family, as they didn’t have squat.
  21. I see they just released batch "B524" yesterday. I guess we'll see what's up with that. We'll have to check the ABV, etc. I'd be curious as to how long it takes to trickle down to the retail stores. Well, at least I know how these Heaven Hill Batch #s work. the 'Letter" being the time of year (A = Jan, B = May, C = Sept). and then the month and year of the release. So, C923 was released Sept. 2023. I'm putting together a "tree" diagram with the distillers at the root, and then the product lines and products as the branches so I know with what I'm dealing.

What Bourbon Are You Drinking Spring 2023

Uh, but you didn’t tell us about the really important stuff like — What’s the label like? Fancy? Exceptionally fancy? Lots of meaningless but clever poop on it? And, was the bottle shape distinctive, and was the bottle heavy? Was the back story interesting? Like, did nuns smuggle it out of Kentucky under their habits? Taters need to know this stuff, so fill us up. BTW, Wash Post had an article about celebrity tequila which is like celebrity vodka and celebrity whiskey or liqueurs. Take basic spirit and add flavors, a cute bottle, a celeb name, and a premium price and let the cash roll in. Article said George Clooney and his partners sold their tequila brand to Diageo for an astronomical sum. The boom hasn’t peaked in distilled spirits, yet, but prices from the majors on legacy brands do seem to have stabilized. So for me Oak and Eden is a pass. Thanks for taking the hit for us all.

What bourbon are you drinking this Spring - 2024

Hhhhmmm. Haven’t had MM in awhile. Now that warm weather is here, I better move one down next to my Bernheim for use when relaxing outside after a day of yard work. Was pulling honeysuckle and breaking up rotten pine stumps so I don’t bend ANOTHER mower blade. Came in and discovered I’d run out of beer. Pulled a new OGDBIB off the shelf (too tired to get out the ladder and grab that Bernheim). That shrink wrap and cork are TOUGH when your hands are tired from pulling honey suckle. Indeed, it is why I usually decant it into an old OGDBIB circa 2014 $18.99 OTD back then. But I forgot the funnel. The wrap and cork are enough to drive me to drink! Got the cork out. Watching Nats at Rangers. Trevor Williams last night pitched for the Nats and TWICE had bases loaded with no outs and managed to allow ZERO runs. I’ve never seen a pitcher do it twice in a game before.

    What’s on the menu????

I had never heard of "City Chicken" before so hopped over to the Googles! Sounds pretty good. Might have to try it.
  25. This isn't amazing, but it's nicely distilled and aged 5 year Bourbon finished in Spanish wine barrels in Indiana. I picked up the bottle last year and just came back to it last night. I've like most of the starlight stuff I've tried.

What did you purchase this Spring? (2024)

Not purchased. A gift. One of the guys in our bourbon and cigar group is very generous.
  27. Bourbon and cigar night. We enjoyed BT, Traveller Whiskey, Benchmark Full Proof (125 proof), and……. wait for it….. wait for it….. 2013 GTS 138.1 proof! Yes, it was a great night.
