    4R Small Batch Select

Oddly enough when I was back home last Thanksgiving I stumbled upon a liquor store that had several barrel strength 4R BS picks that didn’t have the side stickers. The clerk showed me a printed out email that had the recipes listed. I was in a rush, and had hit my allocation of bottles to bring back home so snapped a picture and left. Was cleaning out pictures today and finally took a look. Holy crap the email was from early 2016 one of there customers emailed 4R with the barrel numbers to get recipe information. In 2016 they had nine barrels and as of last November still had a 12yr 1month OESO. Picks most be ore 2016. May need to call my relatives to run an errand for me...

    In appreciation of Woodford Reserve

Are you referring to the Master's Collection failures? I guess I should have clarified in my original post that I was talking about the base bourbon only and not the complete offerings of the distillery.

I'm pretty sure those are all column thought I can't say for sure.
  7. Killing time after dinner yesterday I decided to stop into a LS in the neighborhood I rarely visit because everything is overpriced. I saw a GTS behind the counter, so I asked the price. Fully expecting the 500-700 range. Nope...he talked it up that it was the 2014 release and then gave me the price of $1300. UNBELIEVABLE. I couldn’t help but laugh.

    VOB BiB

As a search on SB for "VOB" will reveal, the issues of: replacement of "aged 6 years" with a "6" on the neckband; replacement of "6" with "100 proof" on the neckband; and dropping of "BIB" or its equivalent from anywhere on the bottle have each been discussed. At length. A lot. Not enough for us geeks. Also discussed several places including "History" is the "Bottled in Bond Act" and its purpose and affect on the industry. I won't mention the related discussions in the half dozen books by current and former SB contributors that also address age statements, BIB, labeling, etc. Based on my admittedly anecdotal experience with intentional and UNintentional SBS testing of VOB 100 proof (see my posts someplace on here circa March 2018 which kevinbrink also posted near as well as stuff some other old folx (recognize yourself?) posted as far back as late 2014 when I think ER 10 YEAR messed with its neckband), I mostly go by what the stuff in the bottle tastes like. For example, three years ago, WT 101 tasted "off" to me so I quit drinking it (except for the two bottles I kept for refilling my fishing flask as I only drink WT 101 when fishing as it is "lucky"). Lately (like the last year or so), it has tasted like its old self so I'm now a buyer. I gotta say, however, VOB "100" "crafted" just doesn't taste only 4 YO to me. It STILL tastes like it is a 5-6 year (or 6-7?) mix. Maybe it is not "all" from one distilling season anymore, but I bet its "blend" from youngest to oldest is measured in months, not years. I say this because my sweet spot for bourbons is 6-8 years, and I have consumed many GALLONS in that range in my relatively short life. Even my most recent 750 of VOB "100" "Crafted" which I finished off about four minutes ago satisfied that brown whiskey itch. Just saying. Respectfully submitted. And so to bed.
  9. I think I missed out on the all honey barrel OF Woodford. Mostly I remember the copper penny aftertaste. Tried it several different times, and was done. Then, my sister in law gifted me a selection from a liquor store. This was much better, not amazing, but no metallic aftertaste. I've gotten quite a few laughs reading reviews of whatever they call their one off odd ball batches.

    Empty bottle(s) support group ~ 2019

I care where my dollars go, too. That’s one reason I support competition when I can. New Riff, which is making decent product after just 4 years of distilling will periodically get my dollars. Dont get me wrong. I’ll still buy some Heaven Hill along the way, but I also want to support those providing competition.

I had a bottle of Woodford years ago and it worked just fine in sweet tea.

    VOB BiB

I agree with much of what you are frustrated with for certain, in the scope of things this is the least offensive transgression to me, but I get how it could be the last straw for someone. I've curtailed my BT/Sazerac purchases in the last few years for similar reasons.

    4R Small Batch Select

What Joe and Gary said. The one positive to me is that I do find this marginally better than regular FRSmB. But then again, FRSmB is my least favorite FR expression. Biba! Joe

What Bourbon Are You Drinking? (Spring 2019)

Last call. Stagg Jr 9th release. The nose on this is amazing. It's like being in a rick house...

    In appreciation of Woodford Reserve

I have always enjoyed Woodford. Much like Steve, I enjoyed exploring new options and found the relative cost of Woodford to be out of line with other options. I still periodically enjoy a bottle and it is a go-to bourbon when dining out. I will say I always perceived the earlier bottles to be slightly better as I presume they came from OF. However, I have enjoyed my most recent WR bottles.

    VOB BiB

Let me clarify my position. BIB as you are aware by quoting some of its requirements, established a level of quality. It has and remains in this enthusiasts opinion an important designation. I also framed it in reference to the history of this particular expression as a bottled in bond. I don’t like that they dropped bib, I don’t care that its still a 4 yr. I like the tradition of bourbon and of bottled in bond as a category. Sazerac decided to F**k with VOB yet again, that was it for me, see ya. I have had enough of the BS moving of ages to the back label, leaving numbers where age statements used to be, dropping them altogether... 6yr to 4 as bib then lose the bib, they apparently don’t have much regard for this particular expression but I did. I will state again, I am choosing to exclude it from future purchases because I am taking a stand. I also said the profile may very well remain intact but again, I don’t care. Others may agree, disagree, understand or...not. My dollars my choice and to me this latest move has IMO degraded the brand and thats where I will leave it.

My stash is mostly 10-12yr PS bottles, but otherwise I'm right there with you. I tried the Select during the Sampler and while I liked it, there was nothing special enough about it to make me want to buy any. I'm spoiled

Like everyone else, I used to always have a bottle on the shelf. That was what I used to consider “top shelf” bourbon. After a few years of drinking other great bottles I realized its not really there for me anymore. A bit one dimensional. I think the double oaked is interesting, and a butterscotch bomb but too much $$$$. I did a streaming tasting with Chris Morris on the WR and Double Oaked which was enlightening and a good time, but for the price, Im grabbing WT101, BT, ECSB, OGD114, KC, OF Sig100, EWBIB... just to name a few. For me, the nose on WR is off putting to me. I don’t have any shelved now and don’t foresee that changing soon.

What Bourbon Are You Drinking? (Spring 2019)

Didn’t get a chance last night but a well deserved pour after spending 8 hours this past weekend painting my shed that I’ve had installed since just before Thanksgiving. Just been waiting on warmer, dry weather and some free time. Oh it was definitely warm this past weekend in MD.
  21. Can anyone tell me if the "Approved by Lincoln Henderson" bottles were column stilled vs pot stilled? I have 1 bottle left and those bottles tasted, to me at least, much better than the subsequent Chris Morris bottles I tried. (I'm fully aware it could just be my mind working on me because there was a change......) I do have to say, however, the few times I've had WR recently its been much more to my liking.

Welp...........I see more ECBP in your future.

    4R Small Batch Select

This 4R is nowhere in the same league as ECBP for my tastes (and money). ECBP is superior in every measurable category, to me. I keep trying to find a connection to this 4R bottling, but just haven’t so far.
  24. Just right. Cheers!
  25. That's the highest proof I've seen to date. Enjoy! Cheers!

    4R Small Batch Select

With a bunker full of Rutledge era 11-15 year old PS bottles purchased for under $50, I'm still having a hard time getting on this train. Anyone got anything yet that's going to change my opinion? So far, the posts look like it's kind of meh. Until someone (I trust) tells me that the $52 (current local) is better than a WTKS or ECBP, ima gonna keep dropping that fiddy+(when I'm in the market for a stock addition) on something else.
