Opinions on Total Wine barrel picks?
flahute replied to Charlutz's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
There can be a lot of variation! The only reason I know that though is because I did a blind battle of the single barrels with something like 32 OFSiB's. Outside of that very focused exercise though I'd agree with you that it seems very consistent. -
Oh yeah.........we gotta make this happen. I'll buy round two.

He can do that or join one of those religions where they don't drink. -
That OC 1977 caught my eye. I bet I drank some of that one with my Dad. I’d buy one round just to toast him IF I could drink it with Tab.

What Water of Life/Scotch are drinking or purchased 2024 ?

Opened a dusty from the bunker - Balvenie 17 year sherry cask - of course the cork broke - a perfect opportunity to try Mrs.jvd99's X-Mas present, a broken cork remover which I saw someone use on SB - welp, it didn't work, just pushed the cork in - so I I went manual and got one of my old Weller 107 bottles, a small funnel and a strainer and decanted into the Weller bottle, then back into the original bottle - found an old Balvenie cork (thanks again SB for advice to collect corks for this specific situation) but it didn't fit, but found a Springbank cork that fit - all good. This is a spectacular dram after all said and done! - Yesterday

Exactly as @Kepler mentioned. I tried them sbs and found that I liked the Woodford a hair better and it could be found approximately $5 cheaper here. -

I have a tasting at Lux Row Friday afternoon, I wonder if this will be part of the line-up? I hope so as you said its promising, I expect good things. -
They either don't know that it is illegal or they don't care. They do it because they haven't been caught. When they get caught, they'll be talking with their defense attorneys.

I echo what @Paulo says, .. .some states don't allow shipping to their states. That's basically the way it is here in Texas where I live. Local stores are allowed to deliver to my home, but shipping from out of state is frowned upon. There are some online sellers that will ship but I don't understand (maybe I don't want to know, hehe) how they get away with it.

I would be surprised if there is very much variation between picks of Old Forester BP. That is one of the most consistent profiles out there from what I can tell (all OF bourbon are aged 4-5 years, maybe as high as 6). Curious if anybody disagrees or has had a different experience with different OF single barrel profiles. -

I tried a sample of this recently and I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. If I didn't already possess a bunker-full of Barrell cask strength batches, I would definitely run (not walk) to my local store to grab one of these.

What did you purchase this Spring? (2024)
Kepler replied to markandrex's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
I haven't seen that one either, but I haven't been to a store lately either. I see that your new bottle is 90 proof. The old 8 yr Black (which was pretty good IMO) was only 86 proof IIRC. So the bump to 90 proof is a positive step. The old 7 year "Distiller's series" was also 90 proof. So this new one looks like a return to the 7 Distiller's series more than the "black" SKU. I'm curious how the new one tastes too. -
I totally agree with you that HMcK10 single barrel is not particularly well-curated in comparison to many other large legacy single barrel products. About Elijah Craig small batch ... I like it as a dependable affordable bottle, but the quality of that bottle has really taken a dip in the past few years. I only recommend it to people as a basic staple (dependable and a good fair price), because to me it doesn't really stand out from the crowd the way it used to when it was age stated. Current WT101 has surpassed ECSmB by a country mile IMO.

The reason the BT family size was limited to 1 bottle per customer and the WSR was not is because the 1.75 size of WSR are released frequently here in Texas (basically at the same time as the 750) whereas the BT 1.75ml is somewhat common but not released as often here as the 750.

I hear ya. But the Old Forester 1910 that you liked is double oaked and made by the same people as Woodford Double Oak (Brown-Forman). If you like the 1910 you might want to give WRDO a shot too if you find one at a good price... just an idea. -
What Water of Life/Scotch are drinking or purchased 2024 ?
Kepler replied to Kepler's topic in Foreign Whiskey
Saturday night at a whiskey sharing event I had my first sample of Highland Park, probably ever if I remember correctly. It was the regular 12 year and I liked it. Granted, it was the last pour of the night after trying many many small samples of various bourbons and ryes, so my palate was basically burned out. I am a Scotch newbie and I've steered clear of peated smoky scotches because some that I've tried at bars turned me off (Islays with medicinal iodine and band-aid notes). I think I should try the Highland Park 12 again at a bar in a normal setting (without palate fatigue) before buying a bottle. I guess I'm a little "peat curious" and somewhat interested in at least dipping my toe into that world gradually (very gradually) to see what it's about... but looking for trusted SB. com advice on that. Question: is the HP 12 Year or the Cask Strength the one to get? The CS gets some outstanding reviews, so just wondering what the advice is. Or are there any other "lightly peated" scotches you would recommend instead for someone like me that enjoys sherried unpeated single malts? -
