I heard about that no-no bid. That was soooo close. Tough way to end one. Good to see Fried had a great outing anyway.

Any good, active bourbon groups in the Denver area?
Kepler replied to IamMatt's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
Yes that sounds great. As far as Denver goes, I bet your friend could find a local facebook group there. -
Umm that didn't come out right. I need a do-over! I meant something along the lines of music, singing or entertainment.
-
Welcome to SB! I’ve not tried this site, but am familiar with it. I believe many have found info on their pre-pro bottles within its database. www.pre-pro.com Good Luck!

Didn’t you mean, “Ah, the beauty of radio and a ‘vibrating’ immagonation…”? 🫨

IamMatt replied to IamMatt's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
Yeah, it's a shame but it makes me realize how lucky I am to live where I do. West Coast Whiskey Club has grown in the few years I have been involved, and hosts 2-3 bottle share parties and 3-4 distillery-sponsored tasting dinners every year, plus other activities including barrel picks, bottle giveaways, and a blind by mail every month or two. Women Who Whiskey Long Beach is also super active, with a themed Happy Hour every month and tasting, pairing, and other events throughout the year. There are at least two other groups in the area that hold tastings and events. Probably not a week goes by without some sort of event going on--I'm so lucky! -
KSNapa started following C.A. Van Rensselaer
-
I recently received two pre-prohibition bottles of C.A. Van Rensselaer. One is Yellow Label Rye and another is Old Rye Whiskey Golden Wedding 1898. I'm looking for the history of these bottles. Does anyone know of this producer/bottler and can shed some light?

Yesterday, it was a Don Carlos Bellicoso while listening to Braves post game on the radio. Trio of Braves pitchers (Fried started and went 7) had No-No with 2 outs in 9th. Lost the no hitter and shut out on JD Martinez homer. Bummer. But, that’s OK as I envisioned the greatest Met of all time hitting it. Ah, the beauty of radio and a vibrant immagonation…

The Significance of "Batch Numbers..."
aquavite replied to aquavite's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
I would agree. Given the total plethora of choices available and the ease at which a lot of the YouTubers will walk through a store and say things like "Well, this one's good this one isn;t, that one's OK, etc. etc."), I'm left to wonder how they could have tried all these different whiskeys and still have a functioning liver.... I limit myself to no more than 1-2 shots a day. If that means it takes me several months if not years to get through a bottle, that's just fine with me. I've done it. often. I've nursed a pair of bottles of my favorite cordial for almost 40 years now (See my first thread about trying to get Pere BLanc from Luxembourg). Still trying to figure out how to get more into the US without having to fly over there to pick it up myself. Anyway, I'll look at the YouTubers and, if I see a trend among them, I might investigate that. My next major acquisition will be std. BT. Maybe WRDO after that. Then maybe an ECBP,, just to see what they taste like. But I don't see building a full shelf at all. A limited one, maybe but not a full one. -

Evidently, not very active in the Denver area. Hope you receive some recommendations. -
"Entertaining" your mother in law? Do tell.

What bourbon are you drinking this Spring - 2024

Has anyone tried the new Nelson Brothers Reserve (replacement for Belle Meade)? I have not tried it yet. For curiosity I just did a quick MGP SBS between the Belle Meade Reserve vs Remus Repeal batch #6. The Belle Meade wins easily. I have not been impressed by the Remus Repeal #6. The earlier versions were much, Much, MUCH better. Because of my underwhelming experience with RR6, I passed on batch #7 when it came out. Curious about Nelson Bros. Reserve though. -

The Weller was nice, but I had a hankering for some good MGP. My palate isn't at its best tonight, so I'll save my SAOS 10 year SiB for another day. I grabbed the Belle Meade Reserve 108.3 proof instead and it doesn't disappoint. This is a super solid MGP bottling. It was very underrated when it was on the shelves. -
Excellent and very helpful overview on the product. Thanks

Big Level was universally panned. I never tried it, but several SB members on here did and told us to avoid that bottle, so I did. In my experience very few producers can make wheated bourbons that turn out really well. Obviously BT and Maker's lead the way. Some HH wheaters are very good too (as long at they have enough time in the barrel). Many try, but fail. I think part of the problem is they rush the liquid to the market before they age long enough in oak. Rye-based bourbons don't need more than 4-6 years to taste right; wheat-based bourbons typically need longer aging (unless it's MM, which somehow tastes great even when young).

That sounds amazing. Sadly it's very cloudy here tonight.

And Weller Full Proof it is. Tonight anyway, the CYPB has my vote over the WFP. -

I'd be careful about following advice from some of the random bourbon youtubers. Some of them are pretty clueless. Do your research. -
What rye are you drinking or purchased 2024
markandrex replied to Mattk's topic in American Rye Whiskey
JDSBBP rye while sitting on the deck. We saw some amazing Northern Lights last night. Hopefully to repeat the experience tonight. -

Weller CYPB in my glass tonight. It's one of my favorites in the Weller line and it gets overlooked due to the medium proof I guess. I don't believe I'll be climbing the "Weller ladder" tonight, but I might bump it up a notch to WFP here in a little bit. -
What did you purchase this Spring? (2024)
Davesnothere replied to markandrex's topic in General Bourbon Discussion
My wife is out of the country on business and I reverted to a bit of wandering the path well trodden. The JD rye is 135 pf and drinks like 100pf.
