WT12 Gold foil vs. WTAS

Is this a picture of the gold foil WT12?

I have seen WT gold foil before, and it didnt look like this.

Has anyone had both the gold foil and the WTAS? Any preferences of one over the other?

That looks like the gold foils i've had. Yes it's good, the pinnacle of WT bourbon, in my opinion.

If you have both bottles, look very closely and you should see a small date printed on the bottle somewhere, it could be on the label or back label or even the seal. If you find such dates could you please post them.

I've never seen the second bottle posted with the flying Wild Turkey at the top of the label.

I dont have either bottle, have just seen them around. The picture of the bottle with the flying wild turkey at the top of the label is from an auction that closed a couple of weeks ago. This and the other gold foil sold to some lucky winner for about $200 altogether - envy, envy, envy -.

I cant find the other picrtures from the auction.

Attila, the ones I have all look like the first picture. I've never seen the second one either.

.....the Gold Foil will blow your mind. Top five all time for me. I've tasted from 3 bottles and all were incredible.

I've never seen the second one either. I found a small stash of the first gold foil when I lived in SC. Still got one bottle left, but I prefer the split label. However, I would not turn down a glass of any 12 year WT - it is near the top of my list.

The first bottle resembles what I think is the original WT 12 bottle. It came packaged in a wooden box and is a true rarity. I remember the label being slightly different (smaller turkey at the top) but that's pretty much it.

Yes, that's the original WT 12, from the late 1980s. I bought a case of it circa 1989, didn't finish the last until 2002 or so (supplemented these with gold foil label bottles during the 1990s).

Checking some old notes (1988) it's pretty clear I considered it the best bourbon on the market at the time.

Well, I just bought a 1990 Gold foil and 1996 Split Label and will compare them to see what a difference 6 years makes (other than a $60 price difference).

I haven't had them yet. I've too many open bottles. I just finished my WTAS and VOSN Winter Rye, so am finally ready to open these two.

I was doing some research on the different Gold Foils and it seems some can be pretty woody.

I think some of the later bottlings were this way, like 1994 or so. Not sure if anyone has had a over wood problem with the earlier circa 1990 stuff.

I agree Joe, a good GF, to me, is what the WT flavor profile is all about. I've not had any of the older WT 8 yr stuff so I can comment on those, although I suspect they are probably good as hell. Some of the later 12 yr split labels i've had have been very good as well, but just a tad bit lighter and a bit more wood hotness.

I find that although WT has a spicy profile, it is actually quite delicate.

I should go back and re-visit a Tribute. I think that would be an interesting comparison.

Is the Japan version of Tribute the same as the US version but different bottle? If so......I rate the Tribute over the American Spirit. I personally, don't like the American Spirit. There's a link here somewhere that compares the two.
