Old Commonwealth

I miss it.

It was a lovely whiskey, 107 proof and I believe 10 years old, and it was available for such a low price that I felt I was stealing every time I bought a bottle.

It is not being bottled, but man. Had I known a decade or so ago that its days were numbered, I'd have bought cases rather than individual bottles. It was, and will be, my favorite bourbon.

I never understood what the difference was between Commonwealth and the 10 year old 107 proof ORVW. I had both and clearly preferred Commonwealth; Commonwealth was less expensive as well so there had to have been clearly defined flavor profiles from stocks that were more costly in the ORVW profile. Either that or OC was a loss-leader brand and Julian was losing his shirt on it.

Julian's website (is he still reading Straightbourbon.com?) lists 10YO 107 ORVW but I haven't seen it for a while.

IIRC, all of the stocks for the wheated recipe came from the same distillery(SW). When you buy at the volume I would expect Julian to buy at....there shouldn't be any added costs for one barrel over another.

Just because a label says 10 years...doesn't mean that is all that is in it. 10 is the minimum that is included.

Lastly, we don't have any ideas on batch or batch size for these different bottlings...so, any thoughts on why the taste profile is a little dissimilar are hard to nail down.

Old Commonwealth and ORVW 10/107 of that period were the exact same stuff, although there are always batch-to-batch variations. Julian said that at the time. Some of it got poured into OC bottles, some into ORVW bottles. OC was only made for a brief time and during that period they were the same.

I did struck lucky a half year or so back and fond 2 bottles of old Commonwealth at a German online store. I did get 1 ordinal Weller 10 years at the same time.

I was actually thinking earlier today that the reason I may have tasted differences was because all the OC I drank (maybe six bottles total...I don't drink a lot ) came from barrels hand-picked by Joe C., so it's possible that they didn't exactly fit the standard profile.

The brand was created for Joe C., so he set the standard, he was the standard. It's more likely that you had ORVW from a batch that wasn't shared with OC.
