An ode to Lot B.

I bought a bottle last Saturday at Binny's. It's not a dusty, it's a Frankfort issue, not a precious old forgotten Lawrenceburg. The only thing on the label that looks like code is 04.6084. I'm sure somebody can crack that, but I assume it's the most recent bottling, so presumably Bernheim whiskey, maybe BT, may some SW, maybe all three. Who cares? It is sublime.

$39.99.

Is $39.99 a bargain? Lot B is an ongoing brand. It's not Michter's...I mean, A. H. Hirsch. It's not going to shoot from $40 to $200 all of a sudden. Should you bunker it? I don't see why, Binny's has plenty.

But it's still a "wow" whiskey, unsurpassed. I salute Julian, I salute Ed Foote if it's any of his, I salute Harlen Wheatley if it's any of his. It's just a right fine bottle of hooch.

One of my favorite pours, though when I try it side-by-side with Weller 12, I don't perceive a big difference.

My wife, however, does. Lot B is her favorite bourbon.

Binny's had plenty of Commonwealth, too, after Joe Congiusti moved there. (Sam's had had plenty before that, and perhaps did afterward as well.) Hindsight being what it is, it may well be worth bunkering a few bottles as a contingency.

Chuck, I couldn't agree more - Lot B is one of my favourite bourbons. Even at the Australian asking price of $135 a bottle (about $90 US), I still consider this a 'must have' on my shelf.

The other side of this coin is that I had been somewhat dreading trying a current issue Lot B. It just couldn't possibly taste as good as it always has.

But it does, it really does.

Chuck, I just opened one of the same code "04.6084". This is tops.. It has gone from $30-$35 to $45+ though and availability is thin at best.:deadhorse:

All my bottles of Lot B have the same code on them. I would have even more of them if they were in the $30-$35 range and not the $54.98 minimum in MI.

Oh! If only I could find some locally for those prices. I have been buying up as many as I can find locally for under $50 and have even picked up a few for $50 as most Van Winkle products are classified on the Periodic Table under Unobtainableonium in this area. I would would buy via the internet if the damned shipping prices weren't so high. As it is my Volvo died so I am out of the booze buying business for a few months as I cobble together the money to buy the replacement parts.

I stocked up on Lot B last spring at $33/bottle. They came back in stock a couple weeks ago at $39. The PVW15 is still $36; seems upside down to me. But no complaints; they're both winners.

Excellent news, good to hear. I'm enjoying the bottle I have right now. This was a surprise for me when I first tasted it. Didn't expect to like it as much as I do (I tend towards ryes), but this and WLW are regulars now.

Just so you guys don't go crazy trying to figure out codes, the # in the Lot B front label is a part # for that front label. All of our labels have a part #.

If I were forced by some law to pick just one bourbon, my lips would just barely be able to speak.

Lot B would be easy to make audible and first in my mind.

At first I kept a bottle of Lot B open and up front as it was my favorite pour. It's still outstanding but I have a cornucopia of other bourbons that divert my attention. I only have 1 bottle of Lot B left in the bunker at since VA has increased the price on this from $32 a little over a year ago to $45 now, I'm not buying any in the near future. To Chucks question about bunkering....if I had extra $$ I probably would.

Wow- Bought my first bottle of the Lot B issue today, and could not wait to get home to open it (but I did). After drinking the first glass, all I can say is awesome! I liked last year's Lot B a whole lot. But this years bottling blows it away. It makes me miss the 15 year old Pappy much less than I thought. Thanks, Julian, for a really good bottling.

Well put. I've gone through more Lot B than any other bourbon. It is a great premium pour for the price (just bought 4 more for less than $40 per) and readily available on-line.

This is good to know. I too have 04.6084 on my bottle I purchased today. Is there a way to know if it is "this year's bottling" vs. some other year's bottling?

I believe the current bottling (2008?) has an 8 digit number on the label as the part #.

I have one of those open and I'm enjoying it immensley. My wife and I decided that it was my reward for fixing some plumbing that burst when our furnace went out.

The taste has seemed to improve after a week or two. Last week, I took a taste and I could swear that my mouth was full of caramel candy. WOW!!

:bowdown:.....I'm not worthy of such a fine whiskey.

I've been thinking of bunkering a case so I'll have one handy over the next few years whenever a special occasion comes up.

Virginia has now gone from $45 to $49.90 in less then 6 months....

Old Rip 10/90 = $26.99 - MI $39.95

One of these days its going to be cheaper to drive to Chicago than buy it here. Wait, I feel a road trip coming soon.

It's still a bottle that I will buy, once I get the bourbon budget back.
