Does bourbon make you hungry?

I come home from work. I'm not really hungry. I pour myself about an 1.5 ounce drink of BT. I have one more and that's it. It isn't long before I'm asking the wife, "when's dinner going to ready dear?" I get the hungry's and then after dinner a craving for something sweet.

Any of you have this experience?

Nothing stimulates the appetite as much as a dry Manhattan with a twist (no cherry). At least I think so.

I also get snacky at around 11pm if I've had a pour or two.

I'd guess that a nutritionist could explain the phenomenon based on alcohol's affect on blood sugar. I know my diabetic wife has been forbidden to consume even one drop.

Back when I could drink as much as I pleased, I found that one or two drinks did indeed stimulate my appetite. However, I usually dealt with the problem by drinking one more, which solved the problem. I may have still been hungry, but it didn't bother me.

Yours truly,

Now that you mention it, bourbon does usually make me hungry, mostly for something sweet. But like Dave mentioned above, having an extra drink or two takes my mind off the hunger. :)

Bourbon defiantly makes me hungry and ready for my meal. However if I am over hungry or matelak (food angry) as we call it in Sweden, bourbon seem to tame the worst of it.

Interesting question but I'm inclined to say No. I typically drink hard liquor (usually bourbon, but not always) four days out of seven and don't notice any difference in how hungry it makes me. On the days I do drink bourbon, I usually pour right at 6:00pm and nurse it until (or almost until) our customary dinner hour of 7:00pm. By then it's 6+ hours since I finished lunch, so I'm getting pretty hungry without any help.

Ask me the same question about gin, though, and I'll reverse my answer. It invariably sharpens my appetite as no other spirit can.

I'm a newly diagnosed diabetic. No real surprise as my dad and three of his brothers were diabetics.

I had a no barriers talk with my physician, I asked about drinking bourbon and she noted that with good liver and renal function moderate consumption (2 drinks)is acceptable. Both she and the dietitian said that alcohol will decrease your glucose level and I needed to watch that and should eat a little something when having a drink.

I'm in good control now, but I really watch how much carbohydrate I consume.

Fortunately, I like fruits, vegetables, fish, and meats.
