Rum suggestions for a newbie

Hi all. I am currently trying to broaden my taste for spirits and have been thinking about trying a few types of rum. Im not looking for the clear, Bacardi type mixing rum, but I think I'd be more interested in aged or dark rums. I can get Myers dark rum locally, but thats the only one I can think of off the top of my head. I saw some Bacardi 8yo at Liquor Square recently as well. Can anyone give me some suggestions for some of the more flavorful dark or aged rums out there? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My recommendations for beginning sampling would be:

Appletons (either VX or Extra depending on how much your budget allows)

Pyrat

I agree with Vange...there have been some really good rum threads in the past.

With that, I also look for some smaller names than Bacardi and some of the others...go small hand crafted when possible. I also like Pyrat XO in the very short squatty bottle.

Here is a little hint for the search function.

Try...." rum "

...with the spaces and quotes...it came back with 392 hits. You could further specify THREAD TITLES only and get fewer results. That search came back with 31 hits....much easier to navigate.

There are two I like right now. El Dorado 15 yrs from Guyana that has great taste and very smooth. Another would be Pompero from Venezuala (?) which has a nice sugar cane flavor.

Pyrat XO, Pampero, Appleton's and

Ron Zacapa a NEW rum from Guatemala - Ultra-Premium blend of Rums aged between 6 and 23 years- It is made from first pressing of sugar cane, (virgin honey) there is no molasses. This would be considered an Agricole Rum rather than a Industrial Rum (made with molasses).

Aged in the Solera style (rums of different ages are combined) blended together over time form rum aged in barrels that previously stored bourbon, sherry, and wine. After blending they rest in Re-charred White Oak Barrels.

Medium bodied a little heat, quite smooth with a balanced vanilla, butterscotch, choclate flavors.

I first was introduced to this rum at a Bahama Breeze restaurant. They have 50+ rums on hand and my server suggested I try this one in a mojito.

Thanks everyone. I'll have to call some of the local stores and see if they have some of these in stock. I know the one closest to me doesnt, and the next one that would is about 15 miles away or so.

Prichard's rum is very good as well. It is made from table grade molassas instead of blackstrap. Currently Prichard's rum is pot still distilled. The result is a smooth sweet rum that has a fine cognac taste profile. The dark rum is aged in small 5 gallon casks. You can drink this rum straight in a small snifter or mix it in any of your favorite rum cocktails. I prefer it straight. Some other highky rated rums are; Angostura, Havana Club, Flor De Cana Gran, Pampero Aniversario and Cap Savana. Of course the previously mentioned rums in this thread are also winners.

Try the Pyrat Pisltol. It is the next level above teh Pyrat XO and looks t be on sale nation wide. It ususally runs at the same price as teh XO for half the run... top end go with Pyrat 1623

I was recommended Doorly's from Barbados. I bought a bottle of XO for $19 and it turned out to be superb. I really think this is a best buy in my book. The aftertaste lingered for a long time and morphed from brown sugar, raisins, flan and then into a slight anisette flavor. Very complex, very nice. I will be buying a few more bottles of this.
