Woodford Reserve Masters Collection

My local shop just got this. It's a bit pricey ($85 if I remember correctly). Wondering if this Masters Collection is worth it's high price tag? I've read reviews but they seem to date back from 07 to 02, just wondering if these years release is similar to the previous?

Ian, do search on " sweet mash " it has been talked about here an nothing good as of yet!

If I remember correctly No nose, No finish but what was in the middle was OK! I would not waste the money, if it were me.

There have been four releases, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008.

2005 and 2006 were a four-grain (corn, wheat, rye, malt) bourbon, the 2006 being one year older than the 2005.

2007 was regular Woodford-formula bourbon finished in Chardonnay casks.

2008 is the regular Woodford-formula bourbon made using the sweet mash process.

All WRMC releases are 100% pot still. There are typically about 12,000 bottles only.

Woodford Reserve is NAS but said to be six to eight years old. The Chardonnay-finish MC was a little younger, deliberately. They thought it worked better that way. The 1838 Sweet Mash MC was made in January of 2002, so it was almost 7 years old when it was dumped this fall. The second release of the Four Grain was a year older than the first, but I'm not sure how old the first release was. Probably six or seven years.

The $89.99ish price point from WR seems arbitrary to me. Not sure how they come to that price, but I've long thought it was too high for these releases. Stagg is about $65.00. Pappy 15 is too...and they are way beyond any of the WR releases as far as quality goes.

They do eventually sell out, but it takes a while.

There is a store where I live that still has five bottles of the MC Sonoma Cutrer they can't seem to get rid of. They've been on sale for months @ $78.99 a bottle. I have a bottle I opened a couple months ago. It's not as good as I thought it would be. This bottle might be with me for a long time. Joe

I was given two bottles of the first release 4 grain a couple years ago. I opened one of them and it seems to me that it needed more barrel time. The finish reminds me of tasting white dog on distillery tours. It was a real let down. Consequently if anyone knows any hardcore collectors out there, I know where they could get an unopened bottle of the 1st Master's Collection release :grin:
