Monogram vs. Silver Select

I have often heard that SS is the best JD on the market. Is there any reason (other than packaging) why Monogram sells for 20% more in Japan than SS does?

I can't say I've ever heard of Monogram either.

What I have heard, perhaps from posters on this board, is that SB and SS are the same whiskey just bottled at different proof points; 94 verses 100.

What baffles me though is that I have heard people exclaim SS has a more 'bourbon like' character than any other Jack Daniel's. What could account for this? Six points of proof? Is SS non chill-filtered? Or perhaps those folks just got lucky.

Silver Select is always some kind of customer bottling, although you may find it in a store if the customer was a retailer. It's JD's buy-a-barrel program, but if you buy a barrel it is bottled as Silver Select, not as the standard Single Barrel, although the bottles themselves are the same. The selection specifications, as far as Jack Daniel's is concerned, are exactly the same.

Jack Daniel's only really has four expressions: Green label, black label, Gentleman Jack and SB/SS. There are, as with SB/SS, some variations in bottling proof. This is also true of the many commemorative bottlings, which are always the standard Old No. 7 Brand black label whiskey, though the bottling proof may vary.

In the case of Monogram, I don't know which of the four possibilities it is, but yes, it's one of those four, at a different proof, and in a fancy bottle. The bottle looks a little bit like the Gentleman Jack bottle, don't you think?
