As I enjoy some WT 101 in honor of Thanksgiving's imminent arrival, I was wondering if any of our Hoosier members had any favorite liquor stores for bourbon or in general in the Indianapolis area (particularly Marion, Hamilton or Madison counties) they could turn me on to for when I go back and visit the fam over Thanksgiving. Anything along 69 from the MI border on down would be great too.

You should stop by Kahn's Fine Wines and Spirits, on N. Keystone (Marion Co.). They special ordered the Rittenhouse Rye 100 proof which is $15/bottle, and should have a couple bottles left at T-giving if I don't get a hair to buy them all! My second choice would be their former sister store Vine and Table ( http://www.vineandtable.com/spirits.aspx?type=Whiskey+-+Bourbon ) on Carmel Dr. in Hamilton Co. Looking at their site I think I'd try the Jefferson Reserve 15 yr. or one of the 12 yr. Pappy. Don't miss Kahn's if you can help it, but don't get your hopes up TOO high either. E.g. I've never seen the Stagg there, but have at the 21st Amendment on W. 86th, though rarely.

If you come across any better stores be sure to let me know!

Kahns is good if you are not looking for anything special. (they do have a hirsch gold foil for 229 :slappin: )

21st ammendment normally carries tyhe BTAC, but they dont have the 08 yet. there is some 07 scattered around.

if there is anything in particular, i may be able to direct you.

In fairness I did work there in the past, but I'm not aware of any better stores in marion or surrounding counties for getting something 'special'. If there is I'm all ears.

Went there on a budget tonight and got the Rittenhouse BIB for 15.49, but made a list of the ones I'd consider special, i.e. not found in any random Indiana liquor store.

Any opinions on which should I go get tomorrow, the WLW or Stagg?

Hirsh gold foil 199 (I'm assuming that must be ridiculously overpriced judging by the emoticon above)

Hirsh 23 yr rye 145.99

Stagg 141.8 proof 62.99

WLW 125.3 proof 64.99

Saz 127.5 proof 59.99

PVW 23 yr. 299.00

BT experimental 1/2 bottle 17yr Rum Marriage 75.

Woodford Res Masters Sonoma Cutrer 84.99

Rittenhouse 23yr rye 164.99

You were drinking in honor of Thanksgiving's being one week away? At that pt I'd stop making excuses.

Agreed, Skunk. it is just that Indiana selection is normally quite ordinary when it comes to the likes of the SB.com'er. No disrespect to Kahns at all, just a generalization of all Indiana liqour stores.

yes, quite overpriced. but unfortuneately, that is the range they are all going for. "Worth it" will depend on the depth of yor pocket

Hirsh 23 yr rye 145.99

Stagg 141.8 proof 62.99

Definately

WLW 125.3 proof 64.99

Definately

Saz 127.5 proof 59.99

PVW 23 yr. 299.00

Also, a bit overpriced. In KY you can get them all day for $199(tax free)

BT experimental 1/2 bottle 17yr Rum Marriage 75.

You better get this one before I do.

Woodford Res Masters Sonoma Cutrer 84.99

Just some info for anyone looking to buy A. H. Hirsch Gold Foil 16 yr.

The price from the distributor is running $215.00 per bottle, no discounts on case buys. Less than 40 cases remain in inventory.

That's kind of how I felt about the BT experimental rum. I thought it was bourbon finished in a former rum vessel at first, but apparently it's not. There are two there for you :-)

As luck would have it, when I walked in yesterday morning they were putting a sale sign on the Stagg, so I got the case (3) for $170. Also got the only two WLW, in case anyone was planning a trip there.

I also forgot to mention that Friday nights are spirit tasting night at Kahn's, and last time I went they had out around 6 bottles of ~$50 bourbon and 6 bottles of $50-100 scotch open. Best happy hour spot in Indy!

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll check out Kahn's. Last time I was in town I went to that 21st amendment store on 86th St. and it was alright. I just was looking for some more options aside from Meijer.

They have an Experimental Rum??? You're kidding me! I was just there a week or so ago and didn't see that!!! The only place in Indy that has gotten the experimentals in the past is Big Red Liquors in Bloomington.....and they don't sell them to people like me and you! Trust me, I've tried!

I have an experimental rum open right now.....I personally like rum, and don't like spiced rum.....and this experimental rum is EXCEPTIONALLY YUMMY!!!! Thanks to a wonderful man in Louisville.....I have an open bottle.....and an unopened bottle

They did on Sat afternoon. It's behind glass, opposite the tasting bar.

Speaking of tasting bar, they had a bottle of the Rye One (R1) open so I gave that a try, which wasn't very good IMO, but the salesman insisted I taste a new ~$30 'sipping rum' they had in. At least I assume it's new or he wouldn't have been so excited about it. I forget the name, but the previous description (sipping rum) should suffice. You might like it, but I couldn't finish the 1oz taste. It _was_ better than the R1 though.

Josh, not sure what you're looking for, but I did spot some Parkers Heritage 127.4 proof at the other store I mentioned, Vine and Table. I've not had it, but it was rated 93 or 94 by Malt Advocate and is only $75. If nothing else you'd be able to try spun_cookies Parker Porterhouse recipe. Not sure I could stand pouring out two ounces of it though!

I was at Kahn's on Sat and had a sample of that R1 too. It was good but not $50 good. Also had some Jefferson Something (the cheaper one) and it was good but also overpriced. I picked up a bottle of one of three BT barrel's Kahns claimed they had bought directly from Frankfort. Planning on bringing it to the MI Bourbon hounds. It was very nice and worth the money. They had a lot of this stuff. "Mitchner's" (I think), Bourbon and Blended Whiskey too. Also had some Calaghan's Colorado whiskey wvertf that is.

Anyway, Kahn's was great. Thanks for the recomenddation guys!

The story I got was that it was two barrels, one packaged as bottles and the other as handles. They said all five guys that went unanimously picked those two out of around ten barrels. I did try it, but had already planned what to spend my money on. I'd love to hear what everyone thought of it and will have to grab one of each myself for comparison.

I wish I'd have known you were coming through Sat., as Heather and I didn't do anything but go bourbon hunting (unsuccessfully) and would have invited you to stop by. She's a big Uncle Tupelo fan also. In fact maybe it's better you two didn't meet ;-)

I see my reputation preceeds me! ;) Anyhow, I will be in Naptown from 12/11-12/14 and will be happy to go bourbon hunting with anyone in the area or just hang out and have a few sips. I'll be down helping my dad help my mom as she recovers from surgery on the 8th, but I'm sure they'll want me out of their hair at some point.

As for UT, I've come to my love for them only recently, but I am becoming a pretty big fan. Lots of great whiskey songs!
