I want to give a holiday gift to a person who controls my grad school grant. He is a good guy and I know he likes Bourbon (I asked). In fact he told me he likes Rye Bourbon. I want to spend about $30 tops. What are your suggestions? A local booze retailer is selling Beam black for $28 per 1.75 bottle and I am thinking about that as the gift but the Rye lead (from his mouth) has made me think. I need help. What are your suggestions?

I would go with WT Russell Reseve Rye or Saz Jr. I am of the impression that less of a better whiskey makes a better gift than more of a cheaper whiskey.

I'd get a 750 mL bottle as a gift. ER10 SB is a good bourbon in a nice bottle that make a nice gift. IIRC, you had access to some OCPR in the slope shoulders (Louisville) bottle, now that would make a nice statement. Of course, you may have to introduce him to this website.

I like the idea of going with something you can't find anywhere else. If you were going for a rye, wouldn't the high corn of OCPR be on the other end of the spectrum?

I would go with more of the cheaper if it were me and make a pairing out of it! You can get WT Rye 101 and Rittenhouse BIB for about what you want to spend and then you have a reason to try them both and see which is the favorite between the 2 of you.

Not that WT RR Rye would not be a nice gift, but for less money the WT Rye 101, I feel is a better product.

Cheers!

Tony

I like the idea of doing a "twofer" as well. I guess it really is the idea of giving a handle of whiskey that seems a bit odd to me.

It seems a 1.75 says "Here is a bunch of stuff to get drunk on" while 2 similar ryes says "Since you like Rye, here are two to compare" and a bottle of something unique or expensive says, "Here is something you might not otherwise try"

I don't know. I would think one Baby Saz would be better than two. Nice bottle, good juice and memorable... To much may seem odd... a single bottle is a better gift I would think

Give the man what he wants! The Rittenhouse BIB is yummy, in my estimation.

I really like the point about getting two bottles to compare, but around here you can't get two bottles of anything but swag for $30.
