A new worse "whiskey" / liqueur experience

I was at a school related social bowling get together and with some bar coupons to use I checked out the limited whiskey selection....they had the usual....Beam green label, JW Red, and something I have not had...Yukon Jack.

Hmm....well, it was worth a try.

I ordered it on the rocks....just to help the anticipated not to terrific taste...and...it was God awful...horrible. I am not sure if I dislike Yukon Jack or Canadian Mist more......the Yukon Jack had a hard to describe unpleasant taste ..wood polish?...and the CM tasted of formaldehyde......both, IMHO are to be avoided. I know others have expressed a more favorable opinion of CM...maybe the bottle I had was off.....but I won't be visiting either again.

p.s. thanks Ox for the clarification..I thought Yukon was a Canadian whiskey....in any event....horrible....not sure how they stay in business.

Yukon Jack is not a whiskey, it's a liqueur.

The only way that I've ever known YJ to be consumed is as a shot called a Snake Bite:

Pour Yukon Jack into a shot glass, top the pour with Rose's Lime Juice, shoot it, make a face, whack the guy upside the head who bought the round.

Here's a quote about Snakebites from a drinking website:

My 24th birthday was on Wednesday. Apparently everyone bought me these at last call. I don't remember it at all... I woke up on my friend's bathroom floor shirtless, pants unzipped, belt undone, and my shoes were in the front yard.

The realy sad part is the stuff (I've never had it myself) is sold everyhwere. I recon if I scanned the back bar of most joints around here I'd find it.

Which begs the question; do people really like bad tasting liquor or do they just not know any better. Money, while a factor, can not entirely explain this 'phenomena'. There are plenty of quality mid shelf bourbons and ryes. If scotch is your game there's Teacher's. But in most bars if the scotch selection is scant its JW red or nothing. And who drinks all the Canadian Mist and Black Velvet I see on back bars?

They really don't know any better. A whole bunch of ignorant dummies think it's whiskey because the label looks whiskeyish. Every now and then I'll be discussing whiskey with a friend or two at a bar and some dope will chime in with "Yo brah, you gotta try Yukon Jack. It's the shiznit." My response is just my usual thousand-yard stare.

I like to refer to Yukon Jack as 100 proof NyQuil and I drank it in High School! From the bottle so yes Scott as a shot if you will!

I have had it as a Snow shoe which is Yukon Jack topped with Peppermint Schnapps, not bad but not a sipper!

My maternal grandfather used to drink it straight. I have fond memories of seeing him unwrap a bottle of it Christmas morning, complain out loud (with a smile) that he had some phlegm in his throat that needed to be thinned out, uncap the bottle and take a serious pull off of it.

I just mentioned Yukon Jack to my wife and her response was "snake bite".

Well, I have only one experience with this stuff. I went to a little conference with a senior colleague and, at the end of the evening, he pulled out the Yukon Jack. Never heard of it, but nothing to lose. We started the bottle and after a while, more folks drifted by and we opened a second bottle. I didn't find it bad tasting (and make no claims about by leaden palate), but it was sweet and had some kick and the company made for fine compotation. My colleague passed away a couple of years ago, but I would dearly like to re-live that couple of hours: he is sorely missed. So, maybe Yukon Jack is some kind of pseudo-liqueur and no where near the Stagg I am enjoying right now (Spring, 2005, Lot B), but the company of good friends and place and time can make a world of difference. Just my 2 cents.

Voigtman, I agree that the setting can make a big difference on the perception of something.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukon_Jack_(whisky)

100 proof Canadian whiskey and honey liqueur. Called the Black Sheep of Canadian Liqueurs.

"The first scent I get is similar to rubbing alcohol, then a bit of orange, rather sweet."

"The first sip of this will tell you how thick and syrupy this is! It is similar to cough syrup, and will coat your tongue. But the taste is of oranges, with a bit of sweet caramel added."

-------------------

> Maybe the odd taste I picked up was related to an orange rind bitterness plus alcohol.....not willing to try it again for further study.

Nice references! I have to admit I have not tried this stuff again and it might taste horrible now, which is the big reason to leave a fond memory alone and not chance ruining the memory. This is sort of the reverse of the over-indulgence in some alcoholic drink in younger days and then not being able to go near said drink ever again (seems to be especially bad with cheap tequillas, though I have friends who will not touch bourbon for the same reason.)

I had a friend who loved to mix this stuff with apple cider. It tasted good but had a sledge hammer effect a little later on!

There's another popular thing I've never had an urge to try.

I moved to Fernet from Jager. Fernet with a ginger back is quite soothing. I can handle bitters.....I can not handle bad whiskey.

As stated, Yukon Jack is for Snake Bites & Jager is for shots -- I'm certain both were designed with but one purpose in mind and that would be the almighty binge drunk.

I was at a social gathering and one fellow came to the house with a bottle of Jager and special plastic mixed shot cups....Jager plus Red Bull....he poured the Red Bull in the small inner well and Jager went around it in the rest of the cup...then....down the hatch. I tried it...did not think much of it...really, no memorable taste. The guy had a wooden leg....he downed them one after another...then moved on to beer.

We call these Jager Bombs -- I prefer straight Jager with the Red Bull as a chaser -- tastes like a Sweet Tart candy to me. Bad News, though, bad news.

I think perhaps the worst idea was something called Tattoo. The stuff stained your mouth and lips various colors. years ago while partying with some friends I drank some of the stuff near last call. I was drinking whatever was put in front of me. I crashed at a friend's house so I didn't have to drive home. There was no way I was going to drive. I could barley walk.

I woke up several hours later and was looking for the bathroom. When I turned on the bathroom light and saw myself in the mirror it was quite a shock. I thought there was something radically wrong. It took me a while to remember drinking the stuff.

I've seen this stuff before (Cap'n Morgan makes it, I think) but had no idea that it was designed to actually tattoo you (so to speak). That's hilarious -- I can't believe this even exists.

At one time there was also a schnapps called Tattoo that came in red licorice, blue raspberry and lemon flavors. The current Captain Morgan tattoo is black licorice flavor and basically competes with Jager. I have not had any of the 4 and don't really know which one "tattoo's " you when you drink it!

I actually liked Captain Morgan Tattoo. I like my rum spiced and they really went crazy with the spice on that one. It is too sweet though and I hardly drink anything other than rye and bourbon now.

Well, in my case it wouldn't have been anything flavored black licorice. I hate licorice. I remember something blue and something red. This would have been about 10 or 11 years ago.

i like a shot of jaeger when it is dead cold, preferably during a blizzard...just stand out in the yard and be the eye of the storm. actually, i just sip it...no shottin' needed.

i prefer its cousin, i think it's called Barenjaeger (perhaps more related to other honey spirits like mead, krupnik, american honey).

i believe, double-shotted with jaeger, it is called a Killer Bee. never did that one...
