Emerald,

I'm thinking Old Saint Nick needs to travel to DC with you.

Funny you should say that. Santa's coming from DC for me, brininging lots of bottles and goodies on her, I mean his, sleigh.

Anyway, ditto. Merry Christmas and/or Happy New Year to all!

Santa already visited my house...I stopped by the liquor store and bought a bottle of the OF REPEAL only to have my wife miss me by minutes at the same store. She saw it on the table when she walked in. She was not too happy...but now I have TWO!

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! :toast:

This was a total surprise from Santa.

After opening gifts, my mother in law looked at me and commented that she didn't think that I had opened enough stuff. She sat for a second and said that she had an idea. She walked across the living room and stopped at a shelf adjacent to the stand alone dry bar that sits near the corner, reached up and grabbed an old fashioned telephone like the kind that Andy would call the fillin' station on after asking Sarah to patch him through. Keep in mind that the phone has been sitting on the top of that shelf for as long as I've been going to their house (over 13 years) so I had no clue what it was about.

She handed it to me and I looked at it and said "Holy Sh*t! You mean that this has been sitting up there for all these years and I never knew what it was."

It's a 1982 one liter Jim Beam decanter that contains 100 month old 80 proof Beam. The seal and tax strip were unbroken. She said that it was a gift from an uncle years ago. They also had a race car decanter but she didn't know what became of it.

I'm totally gobsmacked. A sweet dusty has been right under my nose (more like a foot over my head) for all these years and I had no clue. She was tickled pink at my reaction and said that it takes a lot to surprise me. This was a total last minute thought on her part and it was a bullseye.

After taking the pictures below, I opened it and am tasting it for the first time.

Appearance: Amber brown, like light maple syrup. The 3/8" spaced legs are slow to develop and take their time before joining the liquid in the glass.

Nose: Very rich aromas of maple and brown sugar, cloves and perhaps some dried fruit.

Taste: Cinnamon, anise and a touch of molasses initially with some vanilla and toffee and a pleasant tingle as it moves along.

Finish: Soothng though not overly long. The warmer spices linger and then give way to some sweetness as it trails off.

Overall: Probably the best Beam that I've ever had a chance to taste (though the sampling size is not admittedly huge). Not overly complex, but there are some pleasant layers that peel away as it makes its way around the mouth. If you put this in front of me in a blind tasting, I would never guess that it was a Beam product of any age. The richness is surprising when the lower proof is considered.

One question: The sticker on the front says Clermont, Ky and the raised printing on the back of the decanter says KY-DRB-230. I know what DSP is...what does DRB signify?

....The stockings were hung...... We put up stockings every year. Now they're for my son, his wife and our grand daughter. They are mostly just for show. After all was said and done last night, my wife says, "Hey, there's something in this stocking." Thinking it was something left over from years past, I took a look. Lo and behold, an envelope with my name on it. I opened it up, and there was a $100 gift certificate to my favorite liquor store! My wife had set me up. She got me good. That's why I love her so much.......Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Joe
