Wathen's?

So, there's a thread here about Wathen's: http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352

But it really does not say much about the age and other info concerning the Wathen's that some of us may have lying about.

Does anyone know the age?

This thread that I linked to above is from around Y2K, yet there's still a lot of Wathen's around, so I wonder how old is this whiskey.

The bourbon was aged until Charles Medley thought it was good enough to be called Wathen's. Until that time...it sits in the warehouse. It is usually between 6-9 yrs of age. I don't think Charlie likes overaged products. Most of the whisky is from HH to the best of my knowledge.

The current bottlings IIRC are bottled in CA. And you're probably right Jeff in that the current stuff is from HH.

The older bottlings (late '90's till early 2000's) are bottled in St Louis and are probably Medley whiskey as John Lipman stated in the thread cited above. I have several bottles from 1997 and 1998 and they don't taste anything like the current bottling.

FWIW, I find the current bottlings to be very good whiskey.

I've not had any of the current stuff. But, the bottles that I had/have from the early 2000's are terrific. Thinking about it now, the 2000-2 Wathen's I was drinking and subsequently hoarding back in 2004 when my trip into Bourbonia really began, is probably my "Gateway Bourbon".

The Wathens is a good pour...even the current stuff. I finished off a bottle from 2004 late last year and I really liked it.

One question left over as a follow-up is - the whiskey that is available readily today, this is what was produced a HH those six to nine years ago, and is HH STILL distilling the whiskey which then is labeled for Wathen's, or is what we see the last of what we will see for a while by the Wathen's family.

The Wathens is a good pour...even the current stuff. I finished off a bottle from 2004 late last year and I really liked it.

Wathen's is a personal favorite for regular drinking. In fact it is the bourbon I tend to give as a gift because it is reasonably priced, off the beaten path, and ...oh yeah....great bourbon!:bowdown:

Most likely the person selecting the barrels that go into Wathen's will continue to select them from the same stock. If it is in fact currently HH then it will most likely stay that way.

finally bought a bottle...this one is from barrel #857, bottled 4-14-08.

will be curious to see how it goes.

I love trying to gather more in on this bourbon....

Found 2 bottles the other day, never seen it in CT before.

Both bottled in 2008, priced $34

Got one bottle and opened it up last night, Surprised to see a synthetic cork. Tasty pour it was. Color was on the light side, but taste was full on and smooth.

I loved the mouthfeel it had, great corn taste shined through.

I will most likely be going back to snag the other bottle.
