Evan Williams Master Distiller's Select in the ceramic jug

Last night while drinking some Fighting Cock I decided to open a EWMDS for a comparison. I bought this jug a couple years ago, just for decoration. But since I was regretting not purchasing a bottle of EW Black to compare the FC to, I decided what the hell. The back of the jug states it is ..."hand-selected by our master distiller from barrels aged a minimum of 7 years...." so I figured it should be quite similar to EW Black, before they dropped the 7 year age statement. Incidently, I haven't had any EW Black since before they dropped the age statement. It reminded me of EW Black, just better. it had a certain 'pages of an old book quality' that I liked very well. In this thread acording to Bettye Jo it is a blend of 7 and 10 year juice.

Has anyone seen this on store shelves in recent years/months? I don't recall seeing it around here, not for a couple years, anyway

I purchased one(.750 jug) just last year during the KBF in Bardstown. I have bought small jugs directly from HH at their visitor center only to find them empty from evaporation a year later.

I bought two about three years ago, IIRC. I have opened and enjoyed the first bottle. It is almost as good as the older 7/90. Not a bad pour for a collecters decanter.

I don't recall seeing any in quite some time.

This thread got me to worrying about my small stash. I checked my open bottle, that I had been working on for a while....it was completely empty.

I then was worried enough to break the seal on the unopened bottle and decanted it into a JTS Brown Bib bottle. It filled it to just above the shoulders.

Finding your Evan Williams jug empty from evaporation is not uncommon. Don't put these in the bunker. Open it and drink it/decant into glass. I too have a sealed but empty jug.

Randy, is that specific to the EW decanters or all decanters? I have an ER101 decanter from 1982 that has bourbon it in but unknown if any evaporation has transpired.

Specific to the EW Jug. It has a tapered cork closure......imagine a jug of 'shine. This cork just doesn't provide a great seal. Mine dried up in less than a year sitting in my HH collection.

Randy, does the Millenium bottle suffer this same problem? I've heard it leaks from the cork, so shipping is a problem. But, will it evaporate like the jug?

I'm not sure Joe. Mine leaks a little but doesn't seem to have lost a lot. It seems to have a better closure than the Jug.

Another whiskey in a jug that is notorious for evaporation is Platte Valley corn whiskey. Of all of the smaller bottles I have attempted to get for my collection, every one has been totally evaporated. Same with the older regular size bottles. The wax that is used to seal the cork tops on these bottles seems prone to developing bubbles thar prevent a tight seal!
