onmytrack
Anybody have any experience shipping GTS (hazmat)? Does it have to go by ground? Will Fedex or UPS ship it by air? If so, why the 70% max alcohol restriction on putting it in my checked luggage (139 proof is "safe")? I'm going to Houston in 2 weeks and want deliver a couple bottles as gifts. If they are going by ground, I'd better start packing. Jim
barturtle
Shipping alcohol is problematic, most companies don't ship alcohol for individuals period. The 140 proof point is where the flash point of alcohol get to fairly low, room temp levels 80F in an open container, 70F in a closed one. You're best way to get those to Texas is to throw them in the trunk and start driving... mozilla
You could call Spec's Liquor store in Houston and see if they can find you some bottles and hold them for you until you arrive. They have stores all over Houston...so, getting it to a specific store will only take them a few days to deliver. Which, they will do for free, I assume. Most stores with more than one location will do something similar. Call and see if they can hook you up.
barturtle
I'll add that Amtrak seems to have no prohibitions about any of this, so a 2 day ride on the Sunset Limited will get you there with your bottles...or they also offer small package shipping on their trains if that might work better for you. wadewood
I found that UPS and Fedex practice don't ask, don't tell. I have shipped via Fedex ground and have an online account. The online form does not ask for the contents; then I drop off at Kinkos.
Virus_Of_Life
Like Wade said don't ask and don't tell; however I am just paranoid enough to not fly in the same plane as 140+ proof Stagg!
ThomasH
I shipped 3 bottles of Stagg via UPS and it arrived safely with no problems. I also use the don't ask, don't tell method!Thomas
onmytrack
Thanks for the tips. It looks like UPS/Fedex ground is the way to go. It just requires a little more planning, although not as much planning as a 2 - 3 day, one-way road trip (thanks barturtle!)Wade did say he used ground transportation.Jim
kickert
I have found FedEx is super easy to ship with. No questions, fairly cheap, and easy to track.Make sure after you set up a shipper account and register a packate you click "More shipping options." That is where the cheap ground shipping is. It is still 3 days, but much cheaper. I shipped 3 full bottles of.... lets say liquid... for $10.
