So, I was at a Super Bowl party tonight at some relatives. The man of the house is a Sushi chef, but has cooked all over the world in many different culinary styles.

So, we thought the Arizona Cardinals were going to win, so we break out the good stuff, either a Macallan 12 yr old or Blanton's Single Barrell. As I am trying to cultivate my whisky acumen, I went with the Blantons.

WOW!

Very strong toffee/caramel olfactory notes, and the same was found in the taste, which was also very smooth but still had an agressive beginning before tailing off in a very satfisfying finish. If my will power wasn't so great....OK, I need to go to work tomorrow...I would've offered to help finish off the bottle.

Now, Blanton's is too expensive for an every day pour, but I will definitely have a bottle on hand for special occasions and guests.

Its $21 a bottle in my neck of the woods. Maybe I am out of touch with the common man, but that is cheap as hell as far as I am concerned.

How much beer would you have to buy in order to get the same amount of damage?

I don't know about the common man, but you are out of touch with American prices, at least for Blanton's. It's more than twice that here, about $55, very much at the high end of the bourbon spectrum.

Oddly, Blanton's SB sells for "only" about $40 here in Hawaii. And it is the only BT whiskey sold here as far as I know. While I like Blanton's, I like Knob Creek a little better for $40.

Half there than here? I don't understand... BB

I think competition has something to do with it.

The price I quoted was for the lowest price commonly available online.

In Japan there is no interstate restriction or anything else to interfere with price competition on a national scale. Therefore, anyone who sells it for 50 yen more than the next guy isnt likely to sell a single bottle of it.

I went to a "luxury department store" in the suburbs of Kyoto and saw a bottle of the standard blantons going for $80 if that makes you feel any better.

Although Blanton's is made by Buffalo Trace it is owned by Takara Shuzo, a Japanese company. They set the prices, both there and here.

But prices on American whiskey in Japan have generally come down relative to U.S. prices in recent years, which I suspect has something to do with the dollar's value relative to the yen.

That certainly says something about our current economy... BB

Not sure about currecny exchange, so much as degregulation in the industry. Can't find the article right now. If you're curious you can search JETRO. I found this out as I was searching about getting a liquor license here.
