I only do it with bottles that I'm sure no one else will ever get a drink out of, usually ones that I feel are inferior and that I want to finished off asap.

50's, 100's and 200's, yes. 375's,maybe. 750's, 1.0's and 1.75's, no!

Thomas

1.75's are great for the job. You remove the plastic pourer and they have that handle that is perfect for tippin'.

yeah, did that on Super Bowl Sunday. I had a little WT101 to kill and was trying to get a chuckle out of the wife.

Uh....no, I try to be civilized and use a glass.

Civilized has nothing to do with it. Inebriated has everything to do with it.

This is a trick question right? If you are worried about chipping a tooth, use a sippie cup.:slappin:

Yes, but if I use a glass, at least it'll be civilized inebriation.

Yes, I do. I'll finish off a last pour Belushi style.

It's context sensitive. If I'm at home and just taking my time with the bourbon, I'll pour it into something else. If I'm at a party, I usually bring my own supply and then I'm much more inclined to drink straight from the bottle.

I did it when I first started trying a lot of whiskies, wanting to sample many different tastes in small amounts. I noticed right away that much of the taste is lost if you can't smell it as well, so I don't do it any more.

As far as backwash...proper sipping technique allows fluid to flow from the bottle into the mouth, and not the reverse direction. So if you're having trouble with this, you might want to rethink your technique, or stick to a glass.

I've never taken a slug straight from the bottle but now that you've got me thinking about it...I may knock off the last of a bottle of WT101 Clint Eastwood-style and wipe my mouth on my sleeve when I'm done. Hell, I might even spit on the floor just to keep the spaghetti western thing going.

Ok, no trades with you! Haaa

Wiki

"Ethanol is used in medical wipes and in most common antibacterial hand sanitizer gels at a concentration of about 62% (percentage by volume, not weight) as an antiseptic."

So, the standard whiskey % may be a little light for the purpose....but probably has some effect.

http://www.wisegeek.com/why-is-alcohol-a-good-antiseptic.htm

"Intriguingly, 70% alcohol is a more effective antiseptic than 100% alcohol"

I'm with Dawn and Jono, and a couple others.

Some of you guys make me look civilized. And in most ways I'm a pretty crude individual. Gothbat's story about his guests drinking from a bottle of WT 101 is the standout post (so far) in this thread. That was some pretty gross imagery.

This thread reminds me of the old Henny Youngman line: "My mother is ninety years old and doesn't need glasses.... she drinks straight from the bottle." (rim shot)
