How do you hit up your stash?

Just a question for curiosities sake...

Ever since I began buying and drinking KSB, I now find myself getting into "taster's event" mode whenever I decide to hit up my stash...

In other words, I have just about one bottle of every widely available KSB I can find here in Hawaii in my stash... JBB, JBR, KC, MM, Bulleit, WR, WT101, EWB, EWSB.

So, when I feel like drinking bourbon, I'll start with a dram of one, and proceed to have one of each based on random choices when I look at my bar. I'll typically have 3-6 drinks, every time a different bourbon at every pour.

I've noticed over time that I have started to really discern the differences between each. Sometimes, when I get up to 6 or more pours in one night, I'll wake up the next morn with a pretty good headache...

....but I was just curious, as I've looked at the pics of some of ya'all's bunkers, and seen more than a few of you list your extensive collections - do you typically choose one bourbon to savor when you drink, or do you do like I do and just drink a different pour everytime until you're done drinking for the evening?

I try a new label for each pour...most of the time. It is rare that I will just have one label in an evening. I prefer the journey through the flavors.

I am the same as Mozilla. I always want to keep comparing.

Even if I just had the best Bourbon in the world, I try something else.

My intentions are usually to pour just one bourbon and stick with it. Gotta try and send a few to the empty bin you know. But...... there are times that one thing leads to another and I have two. Or more. This usually happens on nights when I'm in the gazebo. Talk turns to this bourbon or that bourbon, what you're drinking, etc, and before you know it, my glass suddenly has a different bourbon in it. :skep: Imagine that. :slappin: Cheers! Joe

I typically have 1 pour or a couple smaller pours in an evening. I don't follow any particular plan when pouring.....whatever catches my interest when looking at the open bottles.

It varies depending how I'm feeling. If I have something I am really enjoying, I will stay enjoying it. If it doesn't hit the spot that night, I will move on.

This is me exactly. I rarely have more than 1 or two standard pours an evening. Often it is just one pour of a favorite. If I am in sampling mode, I will have 3 or so smaller pours.

I almost always progress thru a few different ones in an evening. I will stay in the family - I won't go from a wheater to a rye or jump from one set to another that's fundamentally different. Typical would be two or three different WT's or three different ages of Pappy's - last night was two different 4Roses expressions the night before was EC 12 and 18.

No rhyme or reason here -- If the first pour of something goes down nice and easy, I may stick with it all night. But, like Joe, if I'm in the gazebo I try to match what others are drinking sometimes or mix it up for fun...some pours are better followers than others in my opinion: I'm unlikely to pour 4RSmB as the first pour of the night, but if I'm going to have GDNo.12, I'll usually put it first in line. I also tend to pick out bottles that are dwindling and hit them up first -- to make room.

It depends if something is really hitting the spot I'll stick with it all night or if it's something I'm trying to git rid of, if not I'll move on to something else. I have learned that you can go from bourbon to rye but you can't go from rye to bourbon.

In "tasting mode" -- 3 or 4 half-shots in Riedel Bourbon glasses, savoring and taking notes.

In "drinking mode" -- a healthy pour in a rocks glass, and I generally stay on the same through the night.

In a given month I'll do twice as many "tastings" as "drinkings".

Doesn't look like I'll ever empty my bunker.

I usually try to stick with 2-3 pours (3-4 oz per) a night (I only drink on the weekends). Anything past 3 and I am just getting drunk. A big glass of water between pours and after the last pour will help with the headache:grin:.

As far as a particular order I follow, no, I do not have one. I open the cabinet and what ever calls my name first, I pour it. I just repeat process for the second or third. There are times I stick with the same bottle but usually mix it up. Mind you, my stash is considerably smaller than a lot that I have seen on here. I keep my favorites in stock and try to treat myself at least once a month with something different.

If I'm working the next day, I'll stick to one pour. On the weekend, I'll have two pours with two different bourbons for variety.

The names of all the bottles I own are written on slips of paper and put in a box. When I want a drink, I just pull out a slip of paper and have a drink. If I pull out a name I don't really like, I just throw it back and draw another. it helps stretch my supply of upper shelf bourbon. On my birthday, I always drink I.W. Harper!

When all of my bottles are at about the same level, I pick randomly. The lower the bottle gets, the more likely I am to finish it off. As someone mentioned, you've got to make room for new players.

I am currently on a mission to thin out my collection/bunker.

So I have made a list of all the bottles that I have two or more of and am opening the most numerous ones first.

Except for two labels that I am hoarding for the future.

Mingled in with those most numerous labels I have added a couple of what I call "specialties" to nip at from time to time.

And the two labels are?

I wander all over with seemingly no rhyme or reason. I typically do very short pours and will try several bourbons on a given night. At times a specific pour will just hit my palate... the last several days it has been the RHF's from Julio's (thanks Emerald!!). At other times nothing seems to be be doing it so I just pass.....

And the two labels are?

If I told you then I'd have to kill you, I don't want the secret out. OK?

But seriously they are, Eagle Rare 101 and WLWeller Centennial.

I started my bourbon adventure about 5 years ago.

My quest was to identify about five brands that were very good and to have them available at all times.

The first I decided on was ER101 and then they stopped producing it.

Next up WLW Cen, after tasting it I said I'll never be without a bottle of this. Wrong they stopped producing it.

So I have thing about those two.

Also if you want a brand to die just let me want it for an all-time favorite.

Shamless Plea Alert

Avoid reading below if you don't want to hear a grown man beg.

If anyone out there has access to ER101 or WLWCen, I'll be happy to buy and/or trade for 'em.

I usually just have one pour a night with 2 ice cubes and I continue with that bottle until it is gone then move on to the other

That's pretty-much exactly what I do too... 1/3 to 1/2 shots in Reidel's when tasting, working through many bottles. If it's a night where I'm amongst friends and having a good time I'll either throw something on ice or enjoy a couple shots neat. BB
